Anybody know what 'rehabilitation' is?

Post by DJM72 »

I'll put it in context: -

"At Home the role of the 7th Battalion had been changed yet again - this time to the complex and exacting one of "rehabilitation.""

I'm reading about 7 Royal Ulster Rifles at the moment (according to his service record, my Grandfather was with them in Aug '43 when he did his Lloyd Carrier training at Northern Command).

This was some time in 1943, they were based in England at the time and had previously primarily been charged with the training of reinforcements for the Field Force Battalions. They were possibly based at Northern Command. It's the phrase 'complex and exacting' that intrigues me most about the role.

Any ideas?

Could be that they had been effectively a 'shell' battalion, in the sense that they were simply a transitional unit for training purposes.

They were then 'rehabilitated' into a full-strength, operational infantry battalion, ready for war.

Hope this helps. Try looking for an online address for the RURifles Regt Museum, it's in Belfast.
