Dunkirk

Post by adidev »

Just read a new book on Dunkirk. I had thought that I knew all about the subject.Frogs collapse, krauts great fighters ,BEF not to good, but after reading this book the BEF come out as absolute bloody wonder men apart from some wonk officer's .They had deserters but that was nothing in comparison to the bravery of the guys who fought the delaying action, last round last man in order to give time for most of the BEF to escape to fight another day.
Brilliant book made the old patriotic heart beat stronger highly recommend it
unfortunately I cannot remember the authors name but the title is 'Dunkirk and its a recent publication.

The real victory at Dunkirk was the propagana victory. Even now, most people still think we won. You are right, of course. Some incredible acts of self-sacrifice to delay the magnificent German charge. They were advancing that fast, the Tankys had driven off their maps. They were using le Michelin guide instead.
Most of the lads came away with nothing, not even small arms.
Incredible that those same lads and others like them, got stuck into North Africa, Greece, Italy, Burma etc and finally Normandy and proved to be the better Soldier. They`re all in their eighties now, old blokes. They were young blokes once and hard as fark. Thank them when you can. Because if it wasn`t for those old buggers you`d be reading this in German. Seig Heil :P
