Two British Soldiers killed by Roadside bomb north of Basra
14 May 06

It is with deep regret that the Ministry of Defence can confirm the deaths of two UK Armed Forces personnel from the 2nd Battalion the Royal Anglian Regiment as a result of a roadside bomb North of Basra City that detonated at approximately 2345 local time on Saturday 13 May 2006.

The soldiers were on a routine patrol in an armoured Land Rover just outside of Basra City. One soldier from 2nd Battalion the Royal Anglian Regiment was injured in the same incident.

A British military helicopter with an emergency team on board recovered the casualties to Shaibah Logistics Base British military hospital. A cordon was immediately placed around the site to secure the area and was subsequently collapsed at 0648 hours on Sunday 14 May 2006. The vehicle that was hit has been recovered to Basra Air Station.

The Next of Kin of all three soldiers have been informed. The families of the two soldiers that died have asked for a short period of grace before the names are released and we ask the media to respect their privacy at this time. We expect to release the names tomorrow.

Commenting on the incident, Defence Secretary Des Browne said:

"I was deeply saddened to hear that two British soldiers have died and one has been injured while doing their duties in Iraq. My deepest sympathies and thoughts are with their families and friends at this very diffcult time."
My sympathies go out to the families of those lost. Here's hoping the injured make a speedy recovery.

Rest in Peace my friends.
