Protect and Survive

Post by darkwarrior »

If a full scale nuclear war had evr taken place (or indeed, if it ever did happen) what were the armed forces plans for after the initial exchanges?

Particularly, were they going to push on into the USSR?

Or were they going to be left to die in the nuclear winter?

In the event of a full-scale nuclear exchange my orders were to find an attractive woman and a supply of rum and attempt to shag each other to death before we got too drunk.
Just like a normal w/e really
Scary innit :o

Well, we'd all be doing that :(

But seriously, were plans drawn up as to what the Army, Navy & RAF would do once the bomb dropped?

Particularly, I assume submariners would be pretty well shielded from radiation. Once subs had launched all their missiles, what else were they going to do?

Once the Bombs had been dropped we were all to phone home and see if our Mummies and Daddies were OK.

You two need to get out more :P
And try to protect your toilet paper from contamination girls :P

That was from the basic NBC guide called Survive To Fight and was written in 83. It contains such gems as "Precautions To Minimise The Effects Of A Nuclear Explosion" which is handy
BTW, has anyone ever met an interesting NBC Instructor? :-?

Thought not :P

A full scale nuclear war? Well then we would all be dead.

Documents reveal that despite all the fear and paranoia about the "Red's" they too were, believe it or not, quite rational and saw no need for nuclear war. But, if the US/Nato attacked the Soviet Union they would have replyed by destroying key cities and terrain in Western Europe. But they wouldnt have attacked us Brits because they believe that we were sound as a pound and leftist compared to the Yanks. If I come accross the documents ill post them, but dont get too excited.

Niether side had any real reason to wage nuclear war on the other. Nuclear missiles existed for the purpose of counter-attack or possibly pre-emptive offensive-defence, if you get me.

However, in the event of conventional war tactical nuclear weapons would have only been used had the United States and Nato failed to hold off Russian wave attacks. The conept of AirLand battle would have been deployed - like in 1991 or 2003 - and if that failed to hold them off, only then would tactical nuclear weapons be used.

This is incase it just turned out to be an over-zealous Russian commander or the like. Why destroy the country if that country was not a threat?

All the nuclear weapons would have been let-loose only if the other side launched all thiers first, or were very likely too.

Thats in simple terms anyway.

Watch the Film 'The Sum of All Fears.' That has a little interesting part in it.

But again Full Scale Nuclear War? No one would have time do do anything. Most people, if not all, would be dead within 2 hours.

Yes, I recall the Survive to Fight manual when it came out. I couldn't help thinking that it was all a bunch of bollocks just designed to stop us nuke fodder from getting too stressed out. I mean, if all that caper is really necessary, why isn't he decontaminating parts in stage 7 or his arse at stage 11? Come to thing of it, why isn't he shown curling one down in pic 10? No realism! So many questions.

What is the IA for explosive "squitters"? There's motivation for keeping your eating irons clean in the field!

I like the part about modified arctic procedures. Check with your NBC instrucor for details. What cobblers. That means there wasn't any modified procedure, except you litterally froze yer arse off!

Practice this on yer own time? I sez paaaarrrdon? Just stay out of the woods by the pads, lads. The kinders are 'avin a nature trail tomorrow!

The NBC instructor on Sr. Brecon was a Black Watch WOII nicknamed "Doctor Death". Everyone refered to him as "Her Doktor". He was about as inspiring as an RC bishop on valium! How do you sit through and hour of, "I will now demonstrate how to decontaminate a Bedford with fullers earth slurry," at the best of times let alone when your on your chin straps?
