I want to do what I'm told when I'm told, thats the whole idea of a UK rapid reaction force!! Wouldn't be that rapid if everyone stood around thinking about the why's and wherefore's!

So, after all, the ‘Communism’ of the English intellectual is something explicable enough. It is the patriotism of the deracinatedunnamedfeelin wrote:Nationalism is the last refuge of a coward, and thats all i have to say.

Your knowledge of both history, and the definition of words, needs serious work...The point i was making, is that if the british military is used to fight imperial wars, then they are being used in the traditional mercenary role.

Actually, it's "Patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel" and it was said by someone else - Samuel Johnson.unnamedfeelin wrote:

And once again, selective quotation can give a slightly different slant to the original context:
"Patriotism having become one of our topicks, Johnson suddenly uttered, in a strong determined tone, an apophthegm, at which many will start: "Patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel." But let it be considered that he did not mean a real and generous love of our country, but that pretended patriotism which so many, in all ages and countries, have made a cloak of self- interest."
Samuel Johnson (1709 - 1784), quoted in Boswell's Life of Johnson
