Hats and things

Post by Nomad »

When I served at Hereford Later part of the 80's I often encountered the RSM 22 at 09:00 outside his office with instructions that I and other members of my team (Bootnecks 1 and all) should comply with the regiment rule and wear the Buff Beret with the G&B and of course our Corps belt on the outside of our JWH or as the stay of our combat trousers in shirt sleve order, needless to say we didn't.

He even tried to force me to do so by making it a direct order but I was not in the army and RM dress reg's did not allow such dress.

Though at certain times we often posed as different arms and ranks, I was once an LI Capt in Cyprus for a few weeks and an RM Lt in the states, Well they had better rations and accomodation, and it helped us keep a low profile...

One of my Mne's was playing as a Stripey and 40 Cdo came over for a spell, should have seen his mates dumb struck as to how he could have rissen to this rank within 18 months of leaving Recce Tp 40...

on the subject of Badges, well times change and they must move on, there were times when Bootnecks couldn't get into the SAS without leaving the Corps and joining R Sqn TA, so things change for the better in the long run. SB has worked outside of the Corps for some time now, it would be foolish to just recruit from the Corps (As good as it is). I think it is good for the SBS to get it's own Capbadge at least it is not being fully absorbed into the SAS and wearing there's

On the subject of cap badges: "If it ain't broke, don't fix it"!! What is WRONG with these people, faffing about, tinkering with things that don't need fixing? Like the motto. What exactly was wrong with "Not by strength by guile"? Not macho enough for someone who needs his ego massaging?

Re berets: And what's this trend over the last few years of Marines wearing their capbadges on the side of their head like some pongo? (No offence to any of our "brothers" who are tuned in) Traditions should be fought for and preserved, not sacrificed to the latest fashion. Meant to look tough, or what? Tosspots.

Gotta agree with you, although im not a Marine yet i have noticed how stupid the cap badge looks on the side of the head. Theres a picture of one in todays Sunday Mail.

Surely this is a matter for the members of SB to decide. Do they want to remain members of the Corps or do they want to transfer to the army once their SC training is complete. If they fail their SC3 would they be very welcome back in a unit, as they were all ready to go over the dark side had they passed. Also what happens when they are to old and knackered (sound familiar?) for a clandestine role and the sneaky beakies no longer want them. Call me a cynic, but it will be "Thanks Royal, now piss off".

I say stay independent. At one time I was part of an equipment trials team working for the Army, and the most fun of the whole gig was baiting perce, with his daft drill (We had a Coldstream Guards sargeant) and his peculiar dress codes. Throw in our quaint terminology and the poor souls are lost, but it's good for a laugh.

Archie,

(sorry if this is "off topic" Mr moderator)

Have you come across Geoff Boyd in NZ? Pse let me know. Ex radio tech. NZ oil rigs, NS SAS ( the boy scout in him) and last heard of as a NZ TV actor. Well he always was a bullshitter first class. Happy days!!
By the way, I see your profile says your a bastard. A very honorable position. But Capatlist??? I'll send you a sword to throw yourself on. In true seppuku tradition.

Sorry but no i don't know him. Being a capitalist suits me and keeps the 20 people i employ pretty happy too. They say most people start life as idealists and end up as capitalists, i just went straight to capitalism. As for the seppuku, can i jump of my wallet instead.

Who was the PW (Johnny ?) who joined 41 recce trp, wore his cap badge over his ear, hose tops and had buggers grips; but on an ex in Cyprus forgot he had a letter from his pash in his jacket. So when we bumped his section and nabbed him his letter made it around the whole unit. he was not a happy bunny; read and learn all you sprogs.
You should talk to somebody who gives a f**k.
