The very idea of a submarine lurking off your coastline within striking distance of your cities is a very powerful deterrent. I've always been a big fan of the surface fleet and the days of Jutlandesque grand battles. However I believe it is absolutely essential for potential enemies to know we have the capability to strike hard at any corner of the world. Carriers are easier to spot than an efficient well maintained submarine and that additional visibility puts our service personnel at great risk. A hight tech replacement for trident although expensive to design and build might be far more cost effective in the long run.

I don't like nuclear weapons but whilst they exist and are in the hands of non allied nations i believe it is vital we maintain an effective arsenal.

Now on the other side, our infantry are massively overstretched and with various rumblings on the horizon look like they will be put under yet more pressure. The use of reserve forces is becoming far more frequent and mobilisation far more extensive. Rather than downsizing the government infact needs to expand the army. But i don't think we should rob Andrew to pay Percy, money needs to be found elsewhere. Which as we know will not happen.

Right peeps, time for an ex submariner to step in, first off in response to original post jojo you stated

“We still have the S and the V boats. Not too sure how the RN is gonna swing this but we still have enough subs to operate, guess they are cutting back on guel, maintenance etc. I Know the T's have been in and out of dry dock a few times, how ever, they have also been bouncing off iceburgs and the sea bed more than a good few times over the past few years Don't worry though, they announced the T's decommission but they will still be in service, my guessing until 2019. It takes along time to weed out our RN's ships and boats!

T boats don’t and never have carried Trident, the T stands for Trafalgar (Jojo I’ll let you off if you can tell me the shafts and blades on a T boat other than Raglafart). I’m glad we’ve cleared that one up. The OP has a point should we pay through the nose to replace a weapons system that people feel may not be required. My humble opinion is yes.
The world is an ever fluid place and the requirements of today’s forces are ever changing. If we are not prepared to meet any threat we are just that, not prepared. Nuclear weapons have always been a deterrent, and as tab has suggested have kept the peace for 60 years. Although I find the thought of having to use them abhorrent, I can see them as the only way we are going to protect ourselves from an ever growing number of rogue states obtaining nukes. Mutually Guaranteed Destruction don’t ya just love it!

As to submarines in general Sonne has hit the nail on the head there is no weapon more deadly.

But keep in mind that the RN is about to launch the Astute (SSN), Which if I remember is to replace the Swiftsure class. The Astute class weapons load will be alot higher and should stand at 50% greater than T boats (Trafalger)
Above is what my original post said, never said T was for Trident

I know T's are not trident and I know trident is a weapon and not a boat  However, I am not allowed to relay props and shafts etc due to OPSEC  Ach, 7 blades, 1 shaft. The boat can also achieve 20 knots (surfaced) and 32 knots (dived). The T is a hunter-killer and holds the Type 2076 hull mounted active search and attack sonar, a Type 2007 passive sonar, a Type 2082 passive intercept and ranging sonar and a Type 2046 towed array.

Is that good enough?

Apologies towards the trident but I was expressing the new role for the Asutes in hope it would make sense.

Edit to say none of the above us breaking OPSEC!

I can't remember a whole lot, remember I have been out since Feb 2004, so what I can remember is only a thin layer.

Now if you wanna talk harmonics etc, I'd be more than happy, shafts, props, deisels, blades, chirpping...............remember chirpping lol

Beth I've been out since 2000, had 4 jobs all of which I've more or less forgot how to do but could go back to boats tommorow and carry on from where I left off, weird eh just goes to show that having something beat into you really can work.
One day if I ever win the lottery I'm going to employ a boat to run around the Iceland/ Faeroe island gap with a hyrophone set at 50hz.
That should keep the barstewards on their toe's, incidently as a UC on a skimmer how much passive work do you do? Cant imagine a skimmer picking up a boat aurally on broadband.

The lotto? Why not just get a jetski, a mask, some fins, snorkle with grenades and an MP5 and cruise right now

I like those Italian mini-subs. You guys have the lotto? Does anyone ever win? I played scratch offs in Ireland, I only won 7 Euros. Horse racing did better for me.

1) Unlike the American every day hero, we are not all 007's

2) Yes people win, just not me or my family yet

3) That is what you call 'Luck O'Irish'

It doesn't take a hero to be a badass. But it helps if you are a Redneck.
Rednecks are the toughest mother teachers in America.

All that would be legal here except for the grenades, but you might be able to get a permit, who knows?

Wholley would know.
