Commonwealths
Now one sport when I was younger that I would try and avoid was the pole vault. When I was doing it we had a bamboo cane about 15 feet long. You had to sprint down the track and aim for a small slot in the ground then throw your head back and your feet up. If you missed the slot you went down the cinder track on the back of head, None of those poofy rubberised tracks in those days, as you can see there are reason for my bouts of insanity

Ded orn yourself big mon, what about ye, Norn Iron, barm brac, Olster Froy.
There, is that better
Anyway
to return to me thread.....
OZ version of What The Papers Say and the telly critique is called Media Watch(wots that about then `arry?
)
Amongst other stuff, the coverage of the games was given a thorough airing. What was re-assuring to me, was the way that all the points I`ve mentioned were picked up by the presenter and she cited examples from the world`s media who where just as quick to pick up on it. The events with no winner or silver medalists, just a bronze medalist from OZ, ignoring other countrys athletes like the Injun bloke in the shooting(I didn`t even know he did so well), the jingoistic style of reporting"best ever games better than anyone else could ever put on with the greatest ever number of medals won by the best ever country etc"
Me two sexist oppos in the weight lifting were singled out for particular attention and a couple of examples that I had missed were shown. Firstly a big girl from one of the Pacific island nations in the clean and jerk who happened to resemble Baloo, was treated to the remark"she`ll get an extra paw-paw for that tonight" and when Miss Breeze was doing her stuff one of the guys said "Good snatch" as she lifted the weight off the deck, to which the other replied "and a clean snatch mate" Reply , "you can`t beat a good clean snatch mate"
Farking hillarious in a bar or in private, but not on national television, hey.
I love it down here and like me Irish Oppo I`m proudly Australian.
Doesn`t mean I can`t speak out when I see something ain`t right. The OZ athletic team are fantastic and their achievement speaks for itself. The coverage in certain sections of the media and Channel Nine in particular was, frankly an embarassment.

I lost a fair bit of interest knowing that our Beth would not be competing.
However, I made a point of looking in at the closing ceremony as the Sydney Olympics do was an absolute blinder and reduced me to tears.
Commonwealth closing ceremony? Shite!
Bring on the Olympics and let's see our local lass come home with the first ever GB Women's gymnastics medal!

Bloody skool teechers
Tone the Cult was addressing our Federal Parliament and he cracked a funny based on the OZ t.v. ad campaign that you’ll no doubt be aware of. The one with the punchline”where the bloody hell are you?”
Tone says he was so jet lagged he wondered “Where the bloody hell am I” I thought, "if you don`t know...."
Nice to see Cherie is still using Tena Lady, hey
