i think the spongy red ones are the sorbothane ones, i will give them a whirl, if they fill with liquid ill just take them out cos i wont be wearing them that often being a stab, i just need them for tabbing practise because my left knee hurts a little and both knees are feeling like theyve done a lot of work recently which cant be good

thanks for the advise both of you

Sorbothanes are just the ticket Mark and they are spongy and red. I was an old recruit and didn't have any problems. They don't soak any water up. Check out the different types though and make sure you get what suits you - they were doing thin trainer ones and chunky boot insoles that had a raised arch. Top bit of kit.

Sorbothanes definitely help, I never really had any joint problems through training but they really helped my feet - far better than Pusser's (or Perce's) insoles. But then I also got metatarsal fractures with them :-? About £15 from any decent sports shop. If you've got mega problems get some proper moulded ones from them professional foot people, whatever they're called, a few lads had them to cure feet/ankle/knee problems.

They are called Orthotic insoles. I had some done to correct over pronation due to an injury, but they are pretty pricey. If your going down that route get them done with a podiatrist (foot doc) that specialises in sports injuries, not just any old podiatrist.

if there plastic surely they cant collect water? bit pricey though but if it saves knee wear its got to be good right?

Isotonic drinks etc promote drinking of fluids. They taste better than water. Also drinking water with something in it promotes absorption so you hydrate quicker.

You do lose electolytes when doing phys so it kinda makes sense.....but some people because they drink more whilst doing phys get stomach cramps and some people have even drunk so much thinking it will make them supermen that they have keeled over and died! Gen!

Moderation is the key and stuff by Extran, high5 and powerbar are probably the best out there. When on the bike I sip a carb drink with electrolytes in it, I carry a bottle with it all ready to go. My camelback has plain water in it though. Toward the end of a 100 miler (not done so often now!) I use carb gels that you just suck down your throat....again followed up by water.

I think the mix formula they advise is too strong, I tend to weaken all the drinks with water as the bottom line is thats the stuff that will hydrate you, the rest just helps it happen.

You could go into the technicalities of salt / electrolyte deprevation etc etc, but as medics we were taught if your at that stage and need a boost its too late. gentle sipping throughout extended phys with carb loading and a good healthy diet is all you need.

Dont be conned by the adverts saying it will extend your limits during phys, cheaper way is to eat breakfast and drink throughout the day.

If your still struggling then crack on with the creatine, EPO and growth hormone supplements.

A lot of lads used that gel stuff on the 30 miler, they flog it in the NAAFI along with protein and energy bars by the same people. The med centre have a super duper version of it which is basically pure carbs, high as a kite after you've got a couple of them down you

I sometimes stuff some fruit pastels, jelly babies joosters etc down me neck before what looks to be a tricky tab. Also full of carbs and taste nice and gives you something to take your mind of the tab as you are doing it.

That butterscotch stuff tasted like sick! and didnt look much better.

Remember the white rolos, originally they were brown but age had whitened them :o still nice though, and remember to give your SSM the last one (after throwing it into sheep shit for the duration of the shitty exercise he's put you on!)

The new rations kicks ass... Love the yorkies in them :D

On antoher note... Go gels - had my ups and downs with them, tried to survive off them for 8 hours over the hills...didnt work :P

water is absorbed more quickly if it is a very weak glucose solution (no more than 3% i think). If you are eating sensibly you shouldnt really have to replace too much electrolyte - taking on electrolyte actually takes water away from your body into your gut or similar (We had a lesson from a Doc (yes a real Doc but not THE Doc) about it the other day..) which means you will not hydrate as well, and hydration is ussually much much more of a problem then low body salts.

I like to eat chopped dates and nuts with a bit of chocolate and then have maybe 1 electrolyte drink in the tab..

One lad I knew swore by bacon butties!? Dunno how you would go about finding the time getting them down your neck in a military situation but I tried them for a quick snack before training and they gave me a mega boost of energy, very suprising! I used to get marzipan and get that down my neck when in the field and on tabs that seemed to do the job but i think water supped throughout the day was the main thing that kept me tickin over.
