My mum said that she wouldnt mind me going to places like iraq as its part of the job and it would happen in basically every other service but the thing that she was discouraged by can be told by one word deepcut

no, they've had a sharp drop in recruitment

ive got my name down to go to afghanistan but it looks like i'll be in the regulars by then

probably more chance of me getting shot in the dodgy area i live in

seriously though, it is something i have thought long and hard about, and i would never take it lightly, as much calm as basra seems at the moment it has on occasion flared up and the way iraq is at the moment things could turn very sh*tty very quickly

but you sign up knowing that in this climate, and do your job that youve been paid to do when the time comes, ive got no time for soldiers who whine about beeing sent to war in an all volunteer army

Well it's probably a good thing they didn't try to join up. I hardly think being talked out of joining by a worried mam is showing total commitment, and I can't believe people would consider joining Royal if they were scared of being killed. I would rather die doing something I want to commit my entire life too than in retirement after 40 years of a 9 to 5 office job. But maybe that's just me. I'd give anything to get my lid, and I'm not going to let something like my family's opinion get in my way. My mum's half and half at the moment and my dad supports the Iraq war totally, so I don't think I'll have huge problems, but you never know. Similiarly, I'd never give up joining for a girlfriend, maybe this seems strange to other people but I take total commitment seriously. And I'm not even within a year of joining.

Am I alone on this?

Zak :-?
zak whilst im not "scared shitless" of being killed i dont revel in the prospect of getting a sucking chestwound in the desert, and wearing a beret of any colour would not for me comphensate much for the pain it would cause my loved ones, even a postumous VC would be pretty small comphensation, id rather have the green beret and live to tell my grandkids about it and let the other misguided c**t die for islam when i put one in his skull

and when the time comes i know ill be alright because one thing ive never lacked is courage no matter how many times its gotten me into trouble, i would rather die than be a coward and put oppos in danger

Well I thought my post said it all. I agree with all of that and wish you all the look in avoiding bullets.

Joining the Marines is probably the only thing that I really want to do - so much that I havent really thought about much else. I suppose that if I didnt get in for whatever reason, Id try an join one of the other services or maybe the police. The problem is I havent really lined myself up for anything else. Ive got a shit pointless job at the moment and im affraid that some people may say that the only reason I want to join is to get away from my job - which is not true. I know people who ahve joined the army basically because they are sick and tired of civilian life, not because they have an ambition to join up. Obviously this is only a minority and many people have a great ambitoion to join the army. However that minority is what makes many people believe that the army is for no hopers. I think the war in Iraq has shown many potential recruits and civilians alike that the forces require a high degree of professionalism and determination. Recruitment problems may just stem from the fact that only the determined are applying, while many others who would normally apply realise that the military is not for them becasue they simply wouldnt fit in.

I think the lack of knowledge breeds fear and contempt with the civilian population as a whole, especially in the more liberal establishments (college's, uni's etc) it is easy for them to pigeon hole soldiers as being murder's and baby killers as they have no "actual" knowledge of what goes on and the type of job the armed forces actually do. All we see is what’s on the news, deepcut, Iraq and so on.

These people who have a go at the armed forces would be the first ones to take a conscientious objectors stance if something "big" were to ever happen. Laugh it off, walk away or simply don’t waste your breath in answering them back.

I have been called many things just for being in the TA, and joining the RM. it doesn’t bother me none, as I know I’m doing something worth while with my life as they stand there getting fat and stoned on weekends in between working at sainsbury.
