How many threads do you want to post your juvenile crap on?

im pretty sure only royal marines can join the special boat service. why would you want people from the army and raf joining the sbs.
In a perfect world that sentiment would be admirable. However - we do not live in a perfect world. So anyone from any of the Three Services who can pass Joint Selection, can join the SBS. Yes, there are people who are not RM's who are in the SBS. (In fact I hear that the people who led the SBS raid in Iraq, where they abandoned vehicles etc was led by an Ex Army guy!)
On the point of training. The SBS were initially trained to operate from the water to - up to 20 miles inland.
This has now changed to a situation where they are supposed to be able to relieve an SAS squadron "in the field". A total change of strength and tactics. (What are the SBS doing in the middle of the Iraqi desert?!
It won't be long before there is no SBS. It will become another wing of the SAS - which is what the SAS have wanted from the late 50's.
Whether the Royal Marines will still provide prospective SBS candidates, remains to be seen.
Why should they, now that the SBS have given up their Globe & Laurel Cap badge and "lost" their RM identity?
I can see the Royal Marines starting a new reconnaisance/SF Force for the Royal Marines. It might even be called the SBS!!
I've just re-read that post and I have to admit, I am sounding very cynical. Sorry.

Out of curiosity... do SB volunteers from the Army transfer service to the RM, or do they remain on the Armys books?

They remain on the books of their original regiment.
That way they can be RTU'd if they cock up! (Returned to Unit)
