I think a fair amount of the problem is probably down to conduct of the US forces, thoguh it has to be said the biased media here does amke an accurate judsgement difficult, if the BBC and chums are to be believed all the RBitihs soliders are happy smiling people who are personal friends with all the locals, while all American troops are these nasty men shut up in their vehicles unwilling to look at, let alone talk to the locals. But, undoubtedly biased as this is, it probably does have some founding and these things cannot be helping; and it seems to me that if you concentrate and most importantly train your men in winning hearts and minds, you don't need the armour etc simply because you're that much less likely to be shot at in the first place. The more experienced blokes around here could probably give a more informed opinion though.
Oh and Loz, Ak47? Pfff, we need some of these...

And all we need to do is invent the thing

Hi Lozhop,
I think you should do the university lecture circuit teaching this stuff, I’m sure the lecture halls would be bursting at the doors.
I wish we had cool lecturers like you !

Voodoo Sprout
I have wondered that too.

Loz your very fine weapon had its draw backs
Limitations:
The most serious drawback to the AK and AKM is the low muzzle velocity (710 meters per second) of the relatively heavy 7.62-mm round. This results in a looping trajectory that requires a clumsy adjustment for accuracy at ranges beyond 300 meters. The barrel overheats quickly when the weapon fires for extended periods, making the weapon hard to handle and occasionally causing a round to explode prematurely in the chamber. The exposed gas cylinder is easily dented, sometimes causing the weapon to malfunction,
The old SLR had a muzzle volocity of 838 meters per second when hit you stayed hit.

"If everything seems under control, you're just not going fast enough."
The AK fires better after you have put 30,000 rounds downrange, it likes carbon!
I have no problem with the current "peace making" going on in Iraq, however there is no need to have soldiers there for extended periods of time like Cyprus. Even the rotations in Bosnia are becoming increasinly unnessasary, by all accounts roto 16 should be the last one, it is all that is needed. When I was in Bosnia on roto 11 all we did was get in car crashes with the locals as they drive for the shit, sit at the gate and chain smoke saying "This sucks, this sucks, this sucks and this is stupid."
At the same time Iraq needs troops and to restore faith in the United Nations, the troops going to Medac could be going to Baghdad the same situation as in Afghanistan. The US, British and other 'Coalition,' troops should get out, and instead donate funds to the rebuilding of Iraq and pay for the other soldiers to be there. Even though its your mess and you should fix it, I am dubious that this will happen without a UN Mandate.

If a man has nothing he is willing to die for then he isn't fit to live.
