hmmm , my eldest son is 12
doesn't bear thinking about really
Mercury,
I admire you for saying that about your son, I think most lads would be going WA HEY. It is normally daughters that you get protective about in that sense. If there the same age it's called experimenting, as long as you have taught them the real facts of life all you can do is hope they think about it seriously. I keep thinking "What was I doing at that age " and it gets me worried again.
As regards the age limit don't ever bring it down, it just opens the gate to all the wierdos.

gary, so we do away with ages and then when Mr. 40 plus is shagging an 11 year old, it's tottally legal and fine ey? Have you been on your bloody bong or something!? This whole thing is just showing how much the core of society is rotting away, the notion that sex at 12 would be legal, think about it, the age of 12, these people have just come out of primary school for f**ks sake! Whilst kids may be becomign more sexually mature yougner, that doesn't say it's wright, I think 16 is perfect as a legal age & a guideline age.
Well people do mature at different times, and youngster may feel that they are in love and have sex at an early age, but that would also allow some one in their seventies to have sex with a 12 year old. Well I know at that age I never fancied my old granny, but 12 year old girls will be at far more risk than they are now. A chap who has sex with an under age girl normally gets about 5 years in Prison, once that threat has been removed then it allows any pervert to take advantage.

If the age for consensual sex got lowered, there would have to be all sorts of other changes to age limits for things. For example, "How come i'm allowed to have sex at 14, but i can't drink alcohol/get married/drive a car....." Where does it stop?
You're right Tab, youngsters may feel they're in love at an early age, but don't they usually find out later on that they were wrong? I waited until I was 16, and even then I regretted it later!

i just dont see why having sex before a certain age should be illegal - make the age 0, for all I care.
it is NOT like drinking, where you can drink so much you puke out your liver and die (not literally). anyone ever heard of a sex overdose? if the young people believe they are ready, then they are ready. all that needs to be done is educate the children on the risks and dangers, but not in a way that will scare them shitless, or make them think it will make them a better person if they either abstain from or engage in sex.
why should a natural instinct, a bodily function, be against the law? what if going to the toilet, or w@#k was made illegal (as it is in some countries)?
lowering the age of consent will not spawn a thousand-strong army of kiddie-fiddlers and rapists. they are already there, doing their dirty work.
education is the key. educate the children!

If adults (so-called) make such mistakes which have deadly consequences (unsafe sex resulting in contracting HIV), what can you expect early teens to do, education or no education?
What are the risks?
Aside from pregnancy?
Herpes, chlamydia, gonnorhea, HIV, etc., etc.
I don't believe it is possible to legislate behavior, but lowering the age of consent simply opens the floodgates for abuse by the older party of a supposedly consenting twosome.
At best, it is highly unwise.

Not to forget peer pressure. A lot of kids aren't 'ready' for it at all, they just do it so they can brag to their friends. They should be taught about dignity, self-respect and the dangers of STD's, bollucks to this "when you feel it's right" rubbish... because that will be completely immaterial when said person is waiting for the prescription for the cream that they hope will fix the red spots where they shouldn't be.

This is suggesting the removal of a barrier which serves to prevent 'kiddie-fiddlers' from exercising their perversions.Peds wrote:i just dont see why having sex before a certain age should be illegal - make the age 0, for all I care.

This is suggesting that human beings in their formative years should be enabled to perform acts which will impact family dynamics and more importantly their own development. Let me put it in plainer English: this would be devastating for children's self-esteem, the image they have of themselves and how they relate to others.
The physical and mental health implications are terrible.
This is suggesting grounds for legal defense to molesters.
This is suggesting that the country's edging towards third-world mores.
TO HELL WITH THESE SUGGESTIONS.

The thought of 12 year olds having sex horrifies me. I'm not naive and I know that it does go on but I would like to think, amongst the minority.
I think as adults the majority of us have dealt with some problems regarding sex whether it be about contraception, pregnancy scares, disease or the emotional confusions that arise as well. How on earth can a child be expected to deal with something that some adults still have problems with?
Do we really want to see 12 year olds saddled with kids? And if 12 year olds do become pregnant, I really dont see a high number of the couples staying together forever as a happy little family.
If my son came home to me in 9 years time and told me he was going to be a dad at 12 I would be completely devastated. Surely we all want to see our children making the most of their lives and doing something with them. Not saddled with a child, an STD to boot, waiting 4 years on a council house waiting list until they're 16.........
