They were always good character building stuff and believe it or not, quite often a good way to build and bond a team together because you start to share hardships.
One of the Corporals in my training team had a little black book and if you lagged behind in something he recorded your name in it and gave you some extra corrective military training. Eventually, unless you were a little slow, you got the message and pulled your finger out. My name went into his book once and believe me that was enough for me as I made sure I never got put in it again.
Talk about a deterrent!!!
