The mods are smashing these idiots and not taking names until the smoke clears now, but with finesse of course - its come to that as far as i am aware.

Im not sure if anyone else has picked up on this but arent alot of the marine slangs just working class speak? I certainly know of and have always spoken many of the marine words like: Scran,ace,bite,bimble,crack,mankey,sprog,wrap.....

Are these possibly derived from certain working class areas and then incorporated into the marines by people who use these words joining up,or maybe its a case of royals speech rubbing off on others back home?
Bootneck slang is in the main derived from naval slang, with it's roots deep in the past. Bearing in mind Britain is an island, a large percentage of the population used to be involved in trades of the sea one way or another, be it working on ships, in the docks, Navy, whatever. The slang has spread from there into the working class of the past, and some words are still used.

Another reason is the media, people hear these phrases in TV and films and adopt them because they sound 'cool.' Someone posted on here a while back that they were shocked when walking into a petrol garage and bought something, the young lass behind the counter said 'say again' rather than 'pardon' or 'scuse me.

I would love to know where the Phrase "Going Commando" arrived from. I always wore me Pussers Drawers Cellular ditto me vest when in rig. Now I wear Cheapo shreddies bought from the market at three pairs for two quid.

"Hey up Oppo, fancy a run down to the chinky for some cheapo scran? Then hit the Strasse for a few wets and an oggle at the essence parties down the RM School of Dancing, Even Stevens you end up with an A1 Gronk or worse an Arm Chewing double bagger!"

Translate please.

I know some who would rather go with the double bagger than be seen in the plums garage in Harry Arbers

PS Rover, I saw that episode ref the steaming bats (think it was Kavanagh).
It did made me laugh listening to the "jackspeak".
I think someone was sticking a pin in the pages of Doc Jollys book and seeing what script they could make up to fit where the pin fell

I recall you had something along the lines "Aye always a marine". Immediately I thought of Sasha Cohen as Ali G. Ayyyyye !

Is that like a northerner saying for 'I' ?
