It's based on Joseph Conrad's book Heart of Darkness
Quick synopsis:
Capt Willard (Martin Sheen) is a Special Forces officer who is sent up the Nung River on a PBR patrol boat to find and kill Colonel Walter Kurtz (Marlon Brando), another Special Forces officer who has "gone native" and set up his own unit using other US Army types and local tribesmen. Along the way Willard meets Colonel Bill Kilgore of the US Air Cavalry, with a love of surfing, Wagner and his helicopter gunships.
It's quite a long film, slow in places but with some excellent scenes (Kilgore's attack on coastal village for it's "six foot peak".) Also quite surreal at times, however it's not a war film in the sense of Platoon or Full Metal Jacket, but worth a watch.
