You've been there and got the T shirt. I found that the brickshit house, tough as nails kind tended to wrap to easly when the nasty stuff started in training.
I've said it before and I will say it again the guys who hack it are Normal looking bods. I have seen blokes crack up after a few day on Dartmoor because they don't know whats going to be happening next. Where as a young 17 year old guy will smile at you and carry on.
Once CTC had a shortage of 3 and 4 tonners (so the Nods were told) so the Troop Sgt turned to the Troop and said "OK, were running back to CTC" That run was terrible! Guys were wrapping left right and centre but the Average Joes hacked it whilst quite a few of the Big Tough ones wimped out.
The mindset of the average Bootneck is "Sod it! Lets just do it!" OK once out of training a lot of guys turn into Big Blokes. I tipped the scales at 16 stone in 1980. but I was not fat. I could still Run n Yomp with or without weight on my back. It cost me a bomb in new uniforms mind! Them days you had to pay for your Lovats, Blues everthing apart from Demins, Boots and your G1098 (fighting Order).

What kind of people join the Marines?
Yeah im not going to disagree with that, however i just said i thought i was tough.I hung around with a more 'alternative' crowd before i joined up and always used to get stick off the chavs and more 'trendy' lads.
I have never instigated a fight in my life but for some reason nearly every week there'd be some different bunch of lads come down and take the mick out of us skating etc.
It would normally end up in a scrap and i earned a reputation for never backing off and always sticking up for my mates. So generally i reckon i was a bit of a hard knock.Im not saying i was like superman stephen preece,to headbutt someone hurts yourself too much
Things got out of control and i was in court a few times and finding it hard to go out and avoid these nobs who have nothing better to do.Eventually i signed up(which aggrivated them more, probably jealousy) and the Marines changed my life.
I was only 17 almost 18 when i joined up.But i think maybe some of these 'louder' types or however you describe them, are trying to find a way out,and everyone deserves a chance. If they rap, then f@#k em but do you see what im saying.
All i could do was work in a factory as a labourer, and now im one of britains finest few, gotta be happy with that

Some infomative posts.
I don't think you HAVE to have lived a fitness orientated life at all, although undoubtedly it would help if you knew wht you were doing.
I was quite a serious weightlifter (where cv fitness is not really relevant) until March.
Before that I don't think I had never taken any form of fitness, not even whilst at school. I then decided to try and join and having lost excess bulk, im outsprinting/lasting many people who have been training far longer than me fitness wise.
Saying that I have never been so focused on anything in my entire life and have lived a monk-like existence
for the last 4 months so a strong work ethic is important.

Yeah one of my oppos was quite a serious 'weightlifter' in my troop and the difference in his build by the end of training was unbelievable.
He lost so much weight or muscle or whatever and after 32 weeks looked just like one of us
By any means he has had the chance since then to put it all back on and is a big fella once again.
My drill instructor in training once said 'If theres you and your mates on the beach in civvy street trying to trap the birds, and you come out with ''Im a marine'' who are they going to go for,you or the pumped up fella who goes the gym everyday to boost his biceps?'
It aint about appearance and your body, its what you can do with it.
If that makes sense

I think it's been pretty much summed up here.
As Artist said, it's the normal guys with that little something in them that makes them part of the armed forces.
It's that little something extra that makes you a Royal Mrine.
As Tugg said, you'll meet people that you'd cross the street to get away from, and find that they are excellent guys that make good soldiers. You'll meet people that you never would have spoken to otherwise, but they become your Oppo . And some guys you'll really like, but they make crap soldiers.
Put it this way, if you want to join, why would anyone else be so different?

To this day I reckon I can still spot a Bootneck in civvies. He aint loud, he don't mouth off and will try to keep to himself until some twonk goes a bit to far. Then, stand by all pockets. Get a gaggle of them together serving or non serving and they take over the place. I still get people asking when my Friends are coming back (We had a runashore last year) as they reckoned it was the best night they had had for Yonks. No mouthing off, no hassle just a bunch of guys enjoying themselves to the full.
I met up with a guy a few years ago at this canalside Pub called the Shroppie Fly at Audlem, Cheshire. His Missus saw me walking towards them and turned to her Hubby and said "Thats Him Mike" Mike and his wife had never met me before but she said she regonised the mannerisms as I bimbled along. And I've been a Civvy for over 15 years.
Once a Marine always a Marine seems to ring true for me and quite a few other blokes I have met over the years.

Well i wouldnt say myself normal at the age from 13 i could do quite alot of suprising things, not going to say though
Well it all occured to me when i had a thought at 15 i was realy set for being a joiner but in the end it didnt have an end realy it just went on and on, but then i though about making a difference and helping the good and doing something worthwile. And thats where marines jumped to mind.

The Commando must firstly be a highly skilled infantryman.Secondly he must be expert in his own branch of infantry work.He must:-
(A) Be able to move fast across any country and be independent of roads.
(B) Be able to fight at night.
(C) Be ready to work in small parties or on his own.
(D) Be able to land on coast impracticable to normal infantry and follow up climbing leaders in cliff assaults.
'The Commando spirit' which is made up of:
(A) Determinantion.
(B) Enthusiasm and cheerfulness under bad conditions.
(C) Individual initiative and self reliance.
(D) Comradeship.
And for the old and bold, the years may have rolled on,the step may not be as light as it was, but when we all gather together the Commando spirit is still strong as ever.
Be able to carry out all those tasks and you'll be a Royal Marine.Aye jr
