Joining against Parents Wishes

I don't know if this has come up on this site before, but I haven't read about it any where before. Firstly i will give you my background and see where this take you, im am a 17 year old student studying at a private school in london, I am an active part in my schools Combined Cadet force naval section where I am head of section (Coxn.). I have wanted to join the Navy since becoming an active member in CCF, where I have taken part in various courses including an Army Officer Prospective course, of which my parents were not aware of. I would like to join the Royal Navy on completion of my education next june, but my parents are not willing me to do so, this is not because they object to war or anything but their arguement is that I am wasting my education. They have now got to the point of saying that I have been "brain washed" and that they think I want to join "to play soldiers", as I said above this is not the case, and the atrocitys that took place in London 2 weeks ago have only reinforced my views, but my parents are still refusing to accept the fact that I want to join.

I don't know how many, if any of you were in a similar situation, but any help to try to convince my parents that this is the right descision would be appreciated. Sorry for this post being so long but I hope you will help.

I think you also need to make the case that it's not all blood and guts, what about the work RN do on peacekeeping and stopping drug running... it's not all bad stuff. I have 2 friends who joned RN from school and had a great time and hey the food is a lot better for the senior service

im in exatly the same boat as you, i want to join the marines but my parents hate everytin military and when i told them the military was cool, jus making conversation i got a lecturre on how they would never send their parents off to iraq to get killed for tony blairs war on terror. so ive decided ill go when im 18 theres nothing they can do!

Exactly the same. Sprung the news on them two days ago. Dad doesnt mind. Mum went mad. "It's like commiting suicide!!" Blah blah blah. Still is, especially when I watched that program about the war in Afaganistan yesterday.

It's your life mate so do what you want.
They'll come round eventually like all things in life.

I would imagine every parent will be worried and feel the same, as for one, it is their kid leaving home, and one day could be going ot war, although yeah mate your right, they will come round in the end as they have no choice but to do so.

Joining the Marines has been hell with my family, they have gave me no support and even hoped i failed my PRMC (how horrible) so i would not want to join, but i sure proved them wrong.

They just need to understand to respect the wishes of their child and support whatever they want to do in life whether in be joining the forces, or being a porn star lol.

I am hoping my mother comes round soon and actually relises that i am going whether she likes it or not, and all i want is her routing for me, is that to much to ask?

im in a simliar situation myself-ive actually just about gone through all of my education now anyway(nearly finished uni) and done what my mam wanted me to do.i was,like many people my age and their parents 'brainwashed' by the government and teachers into believe uni was the be all and end all:going to uni would mean a better job,more money,better life NOT NECESSARILY TRUE.as many have discovered the cycle had come full circle again and its actually the apprenticeships that are the better way to go(not wanting to go to far into that argument).

anyway,as ive had no gaps in my education i'll be just short of 22 when i apply for the corp which i think is a reasonable age,not too old yet old enough and with some life experiance compared to a 16/17 year old straight out of school.

like any normal parent my mum isnt thrilled with the prospect of her son going off and fighting in other countries with the RISK of dying,which is understandable but at the end of the day she knows id much rather choose a career path where i was happy despite the risks and lower pay(plus thers many more up sides).

her and my stepdad however have given me probably the best argument ive heard against joining in the form of the politics involved.do i really want to put my life on the life for someone like tony blair and fight unjust wars in the future?i realise as a soldier i would simply be doing my job and taking orders no more no less,BUT the political side of things would never be far from my mind.it is however,completely my decison.

wouldnt say the war in iraq is unjust mate bear in mind that saddam was evil to say the least one of my mates ali had lived under his rule all his life and siad it was hell on earth and if any one found out he was half british he would be tourterd to death in a heart beat he was also there when we bombed it said that was not a nice expiernce but at least saddam would be dealt with and was thrilled when saddam was hang
