haha, just alittle banter there mate, im sure you say "Dam England" nothing further ment. But unfortuantly i suppose my experience if slightly blinkered as I only have experiences of the Submarine Service. The term "Just In Case" is a major factor. Waiting around, just incase something happens. When there is nothing of any great importance to do. Work up periods are pointless, as everyone is safe enough to be on a submarine, hence the reason for a SMQ/BSQ, the duties are boring. Alot of people live a distance away, so travelling 8 hours for a weekend at home. And being at Sea, god dont get my started on that......all good fun huh :)

Did you volunteer for subs? Im hoping to go in as MEO subs. How often do you actually go on the subs? Don't you get to visit lots of places an stay in 5 start hotels when you are in port though? All sounds good to me, maybe I'll think twice if I ever get to experience it though....

well, you wont go straight in as a "MEO" that takes years. Theres ALOT of work, Nuclear theory is very boggy. From what I know. On my class of submarine, you will start as an Assistant Marine Engineering Officer (Training) before doing your Cat A board. Other positions include, AMEO (Electrical) AMEO(Ships) AMEO(Propulsion) AMEO(REACTOR), alos your Deputy MEO positions. I know Lt Mole (Old AMEO T now AMEO E). In his Cat A oral board spent 5 hours answering 3 out of 12 questions. It is certainly not a route to be taken lightly. As Far traveling, it all depends on which class of sub you get. T Boats yes, S boats No(there all stuck along side most of the time) and V Boats defently not!!!! And no, you will be put in "comfertable accomadation" People like me dont get the 5 star hotels, costs the Navy to much and im not important enough. In short......im pond life to them...just a number filling a billiet...

Yeah I knew there was a lot of training but engineering really interests me. 3 hours for 5 questions is extreme though! How come the S boats are all along side? I take it V boats aren't welcome anywhere else? There is only ever around 1 of them out anyway is there not? I take it only senior officers get the 5star treatment?!

People like the Captain, WEO, Xo MEO, will get the 5 star treatment usually....S Boats having been running since the 70`s, and they have been over used, and break down often. V Boats. One is on Patrol at any one time. Others may be away on Work up or something like that.
And there is no requirement for V boats to go anywhere so why pay the expense of sending them there?

So as an officer you wouldn't actually go on subs that often? What do you do when your ashore then? How long you been on the subs?

As an officer you dont go to sea! Thats an understatement. Majority of the Officers are required, so you do more of the sea time! When im ashore......Do duties, sleep and get drunk. I used to play for Navy Scotlands Basketball team, but that didnt last long. Ive been a qualified submariner for a year now. But been on them for 18 months.

Sorry, I cant apologise for it. I would not tell anyone to join the Navy. For what you will experience in Basic training. That is NOTHING like the real Navy. Im not sure how different the surface fleet is? A bunch of pompus skimmers perhaps? Im not sure, never had to deal with them.

So what is life like on a submarine anyway? I'd like to know everything your willing to tell, ie what you do in your spare time, how long you away for etc?

For all the downsides to a miltary life, it is still better than a civvy job!! Imagine doing the same job for years, in the same place, for the same pay, with the same people!! No chance....

Doing the same job, for years...with the same people....hmmm sounds like my job there. Well, while on patrol, away for 3 months away at sea. Where you do not know where u are. Most of the Submarine works a 1 in 3 routine (one watch on, 2 off, 6 hours on 12 off) during a work up period this is 6 on 6 off, this is where ur away from anything from a week to 5 weeks away. The Marine engineering department works different routines to me.... When 6 on 6 off, I tend to get something to sleep, shower and sleep on my off watch. On patrol, I can catch a film or use the limited gym equipment that we have,

So if you were applying again I take it you would pass on the subs?! Don't seem to enjoy it much. The pay seems good though. Don't you get £5000 now just for completing training then an extra £3-5000 a year?
