L42.

Basically a rechambered SMLE (Lee Enfield) bolt action rifle and the weapon we used in the Royal Marines.

Out of date now but when in use was a cracking good bit of kit. Each weapon was a one off. i.e. only the best rifled barrels were used for it. X6 scope and you could hit a "Fig 12 Target" from 1500 meters. Marines had to achieve a 2 inch group from this range. Plus only Bisley competion standard rounds were issued to Snipers.

Back in the seventies the only place you could learn to do a Snipers Job was CTCRM. The Brit Army had done away with the course. (silly but their you go) And before all the Walters and Wannerbies sound off please check with reality and you will find I am correct. I did the course in 76 and we had a fair few SAS/SBS lads and a fair few SEALS from the states, plus a few from places like Iran, Iraq, Saudi, Oman, their Governments paid for it. (most of the Arabs would have failed but Money Talked) the chief instructor was a guy called Jerry Lee who was my Tp Sgt when I was in training.

Most of the course consists of Fieldcraft and avoiding getting "Pinged" by the Instructors. Who are the Bees Knees at sussing out the Oddities of an area of ground. The last time I used a L42 was culling Stags in Scotland as they are much harder to stalk than a Human Being.

If you don't believe me..........................................I really don't care! People who knew me and know me know what I'm talking about.

Many thanks - I remember the old L42A1. I am an experienced long range rifleman so fully understand what you write about. the standards achievable with modern rifles e.g. the L96 & L115 are incredible, however I get annoyed when the Yanks start to ramble on about military sniping as though they invented it. IMO the RM Sniper course is still the yardstick by which all others are measured, bar none.
