Just a quick mention in this post. You do not have to be superman to get into the Parachute Regiment. They are not looking for supermen. They are looking for young lads with a good all round general fitness. They will require you to get under 9min 15sec on the 1.5mile Basic Fitness Test. They will also expect you too get at least level 10 shuttle 6 on the Multi Stage Fitness Test/Shuttle Run/Bleep Test. You should also aim for about 10 underarm heaves at least.
The way they work in the Para Depot is they will push you to there fitness standard. Once you reach that standard in a PT session, you will be individually pushed beyond limits you didnt think you had.
Make sure you can pass the BFT and the MSFT in good time, then simply maintain an overall all round fitness. The best way to train would be too alternate between two main training sessions. These been UPPER body and LOWER body. A simple example...
Monday: 30min Run
Tuesday: Upper Body Circuit (3x 7min) (pressups, situps, burpees, crunches, etc.)
Wednesday: 40min Run
Thursday: Upper Body Circuit (3x 7min) (pressups, situps, burpees, crunches, etc.)
Friday: 30min Run
Saturday: Easy Swim
Sunday: Rest
Because you alternate upper body with lower body, one will get a rest day while the other gets worked, and vise versa. Also just to mention a common mistake. If it takes you 30min to run from A to B, and then a week later it takes you 25min to run the same distance, dont stop there. Make sure you run for the full 30min even if it means running from A to B to C.
They will train everyone from the same basic standard. They will start with short runs, and short light weighted tabs, and reasonably light gym sessions (which are still demanding). The fitness is designed to gradually build up your fitness, so dont apply for the paras and train hard, thinking you are going to be doing a 10mile tab in under 1hr 45min. It does not work like that.
Hopefully this may clear up a few questions and worries from those wanting to join up with the Parachute Regiment
