Mike, either it really was dedicated to the "Unknown Dumper" or it was supposed to represent the spirit of enjoyment of physical training and well-being, embodying as it where, an allmost esoteric blend of strenght and confidence, and, in the purely spiritual sense, joy in one`s own ability.

Either way, it was a shite statue :P

Loz,
Your wee bit about the flowers, it gave me a thought. What happens to all the Poppy wreaths that are left at memorials, as well as flowers etc left at graves?

Just a quick sketch from memory of "BOTH ARMS"

Image

May not be 100 percent bang on but I reckon I'm close anyway.

That can of Red Death is out of proportion mate :P
I always thought "Both Arms" would look better, if the left hand was placed in the crook of the right arm in the time-honoured"Phwoar" gesture 8)

How can this deteriorate from a discussion of some class, to Artist's sketches.!!
I blame that Steve!. Having met him the other weekend, (I thinkl!!), he was a bad influence!!

Terribly sorry about that. But who in their right mind ever came up with "Both Arms"? It always reminded me of having a dump after 2 weeks on the 24 hour rat packs. STRAIN, HEAVE, repeat!

The Commando memorial is as has been said a place to contemplate life and such like. Them bloody arms were a laughing stock! Hence my little dits on them.

In the May/Jun edition of the G&L there is an article about a scratch CTCRM team that took part in the annual Achnacarry Speed March, and won!
This event takes place in March each year, (since 1996) and is of 7 miles; starting at Spean Bridge Railway Station and ending at the Achnacarry Estate where the wartime Commando Training Depot was located. This run welcomed the new trainees as they arrived for the Commando Course. The first mile is uphill, but there is then a great view of the Commando Memorial, (weather permitting!)

Surprisingly, this is the first time the Corps have won this event, and as there are teams from the 'Airborne', civilians, and the US Forces, I would have thought we would have had a winning team there every year!

Perhaps now the trophy is at CTCRM the Corps will take the event more seriously. If not, perhaps we should enter a team! :o (Sorry, make that YOU enter a team! )

Artist, I have to agree with you about those arms. I have no idea what they are supposed to represent. In fact your sketch comes the closest to the popular view!!

Thanks to MarkE on 'Once A Marine' for spotting this web-site:

www.abmp.freeserve.co.uk

It gives details of the speed march competition, and also how you can apply for a para course in Holland, and qualify for para wings! Oh to be a year younger!

I hope to be within a mile of Spean Bridge next month, trouble is it is via coach journey, so I might have to bung the driver a tenner to stop to have a look.
