One of these Islamic preachers started sprouting off about being all for Bin Ladin and boasting that Bin Ladin would lay waste to certain Italian towns. Within ten hours he and his family were on a plane back to Senegal where he originated from. No time for appeals or arsing about.

I muse that it's important to look at what the root cause(s) is (are).
I tend to blame it on marketing and advertising: creating markets is creating groups and subgroups.
If we watch commercials closely, we see certain products, certain models of cars, for instance, being targeted at specific groups based on factors such as age, sex or ethnicity.
People adopt this as a reinforcement of their identity.
Yuppies on the make drive compact import cars (Jettas, Audis A4 and the like) while 'professionals' drive the bigger models (MBZ S class, BMW 5 series and up), you get the idea.
Women like SUVs. So ads are targeted at them. Blacks like the Cadillac brand so some ads target them. Asians dig sporty Toyotas and Mazdas and Hondas, and so on. Fast food ads target blacks as well.
The influence of marketing and Madison avenue is considerable.
Take AIDS.
Throughout the late '80s and the '90s, both poof activists and marketing companies for pharmaceuticals joined to 'remove' the stigma associated with HIV positive status. When HIV positive patients were shunned, commercials appeared to promote drugs such as AZT and others which made the disease manageable without eradicating it.
The trend accelerated and we're now seeing an increase in HIV infections. Not only because prevention messages diminished at the expense of drug and treatments promotions, but because a sub-group was created, a group which believes that HIV status means acceptance within their own "community".
I sense a class-action suit coming...
