I read about it in the Sunday Sport so it must be true!!(Elvis was the Spotter)
They had a photo of the pair and I took the rifle to be the new AI in .338Laupa.
Now when I used a spud gun as a kid I could always hit the fat spotty boy five rows in front of me if I loaded up with a King Edward, but if I used Jersey Royals the shot would fall short and land in Jane Seymores' satchel!!.
There is a lot to be said for the right load for the right distance.

I would refer the Honourable Member for Whippet Country, to the reply I made previously to the question raised by the Honourable Member for Truro. There is a lot to be said for the right load for the right distance
Allso, I would suggest to the Honourable Member that he pays more attention to what the House is saying, Mr Speaker.
How are you, Shoulders? Bit quiet lately
Aye,

Marine Sniper
Here's a link to excerpt from "Marine Sniper", a book about Hathcock. (It's a great read.) http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/de ... -0135168?vharry hackedoff wrote:From memory I think the first guy to use .50 round was a US Marine called Sgt Charles(or Chuck or Carlos?) Hatchcock or similar. He fixed a scope to a .50 cal Browning HMG in Vietnam. From his experiences, Barret went on to start the ball rolling with .50 cal sniper rifles.
Aye,
GYSGT Carlos Hathcock is credited with longest range confirmed kill, from 2500 yds. (2.2 km) with the converted Browning .50 cal.

Weel US snipers qualify at 1000 yards with them...qcnr wrote:Is the M-40 the Remington 700 derivative that the US forces use?
These sort of rifles are rather boring to shoot untill you get to 600m and beyond, because you then have the chance of not hitting the bullseye

Hey I've been told to lighten up and learn the English sense of humor...Your turn. Yes you are correct they are a bastardized version of the Rem. 700. I've also "heard" that you AI is a better weapon, as long as you don't take it to the field...[/quote]
Before the bastardized Remington 700 (1970's & early 80's). Do you recall modified M-14's being used as the sniper weapon? Seems the round was modified, too (possibly a boat-tailed projectile).

The US army uses a M-21 bastardized version of the M-14. The marines never have. Now spotters may have been equiped with them. I however am not a sniper historian, I wish I was, but to my knowledge the answer is no we didn't use an accurized M-14

M40A1
Thanks Marine.
The info makes sense. Found an M40A1 link this morning. This source puts the Remington 700 in service in 1966.
