I served during the Cold War too, but I did bugger all except for the odd trip over to BAOR to feed German slot machines with old five pence pieces.

I don't think you would have got one for BAOR unless the Russian hoards had attacked.
As regards Britains Small Wars, one day in June 1967 we (the forces in Aden) lost 22 men.
I can just imagine the reaction if this was to happened today.
Some of us did earn our GSM.

I wasn't in any way belittling your, or anyone else's service, I just meant that a blanket issue of a National Defence Medal for everyone who has served would perhaps be a bit over the top.

I don't feel that I've done anything to deserve a medal, and I'm sure that many others in my position feel the same way.

Of course there are a few guys from when putties were ''gucci'' that should get the medal they deserve.I just dont think the fact that somebody that served in the army/RN/RAF gets a medal purely on the fact he served.Its wrong.I have medals now that I know I have deserved and I have a few medals I know are crap(jubilee,bosnia).We have to wear them all because its dress regulations.

I can see it now,at a rememberence parade chatting with a bloke with a single gong up on his chest,I ask ''what did you do to earn that?'' he replies''I was in the army'' to which my reply would be '' and '' .Do you get my point guys?

I'm no expert on US medals so not sure what these would have been awarded for but to be fair to the guy in the picture he looks old enough to have served in Vietnam and if that's where he got them then who are we to say he didn't deserve them just because he has a ton of them on his chest?

I think that the American Airforce are the ones who give out the most medals these days. You seem to get a medal for every country that you set in.

Wasn't Service in BAOR basically a NATO Peace Keeping Mission? ie keep Russia out. NATO are the new UN aren't they? patrolling the Iron curtain or some other flash point, whats the difference?

I think the QGJM was a missed opportunity to award a kind of recognition token to those who had done their contractual obligations, National Service or 3 year Regs etc. Plenty around at the moment who wouldn't lift a finger if the call to arms went out.

This example seems to be driving at the Aussie rather than the USA example. And heading off the ever mounting commemorative wagon.

I don't see a problem, if anybody doesn't want to wear it they don't have to. I don't think anybody would compare it to an OSM but then its not meant to be is it, Am I too naive?
