I had a similar problem with a guy on here the other day, the guy who started the kit list post. I even gave him my MSN so I could answer all his questions without clogging this place up. Ended up jabbering away for a good hour trying to explain how he couldn't do all the things he wants to do. Sadly there's a load of young lads who've got a bit mixed up about what you can and can't do. I blame US films and computer games really, they don't get it that the British Army is a bit different. It didn't help that in textbook fashion the f*cking careers office told him a pack of lies he wanted to hear, it's seriously out of order that they do that!
This guy wanted to be a trained as a Royal Marine and a Paratrooper and a sniper so he could have in his words 'elite stats' :o The problem was he didn't want to join any of these units outright, he wanted to join the Rifles. I was ripping my hair out repeating myself to him that the chances of getting Para or cmdo training whilst in the average infantry regiment are pretty damn slim because there's no need for it. The badge collecting scenario applies a bit here I think. I mean he seemed a keen guy who was interested in giving 100% to the job, so I told him he should join the Reg or RM and try and get on the AA for the other one, but he wasn't interested, he wanted to have the respect of the Para and RM lads but stay in the Rifles. I tried to explain that P coy isn't the same as going through the Depot and that's the only way Paratroopers are going to respect you (I'm not sure how the RM guys feel about the AACC guys, so I didn't say too much about it, thought I thought it might be similar).
ANYWAY, he didn't get it so we'll see what happens with him. To be honest I think he just fancied being a big fish in a small pond or why would he just join Reg or RM outright?

Won`t they? Fork nose mate, I`m certain it will be a raging success 8)

I blame the "cheats" mentality for shit like Grand Theft Auto. Seriously. And the phrase"elite stats" confirms it. Wanting is never enough 8)

I think he's just a bit confused by the kn*bheads in his ACO. Shame.

Bit bizzarre that this lad wants his wings and dagger and a L96, but wants to stay in a "non-elite" unit. (before i get fragged I mean that not out of disrespect to the rifles)

Why go to all the trouble just to stand out and gain the "respect" of people in other units who couldnt give a toss and paths are unlikely to cross?

Wouldnt it be better to be a good egg in reg or RM? and gain even more respect by doing a good job?

Seems like an easy, misguided, way to glory, perspective to me.

The other rifles will probably think hes a w4nker anyway.

Oh and he hasnt actually joined up yet and passed basic has he?

On the other hand I was "attached" rank so thats me speaking out of my arse then isnt it

Going back to what Tab correctly said, cutbacks on jumps continue, so it is unlikely that other regts will get jumptime if the Paras aren't.

Of course he could always join my old mob if he wants to jump out of
planes and ride around on armour & be a sniper, go on exercises with SAS troopers and do the LRDP course - These skills were all compatible on 2 Sqn

2 Sqn RAF Reg "Hair bourne" man
