'Poor relation' SBS gets a makeover

Post by Chester »

Spotted this sh*te in the Daily Mirror today (I didn't buy it!!) - The latest news in SB's badge drama

BADGE OF PRIDE 'Poor relation' SBS gets a makeover

By Tom Newton Dunn, Defence Correspondent

The Special Boat Service is to get a more macho motto in an image makeover to boost its reputation.

The naval commando force, fed up with being in the shadows of its larger SAS Army rivals, is to change its "Not By Strength, By Guile" motto to "By Strength and Guile" in an attempt to match the SAS's famed "Who Dares Wins".

A special cap badge is also being designed to replace the normal Royal Marines logo which the force, based in Poole, Dorset, currently wear on their green berets.

But despite the revamp, SBS missions will still remain classified and will never be publicly discussed, sources said.

Since the early 1990s the SBS and SAS have been under joint control with the same overall director, a brigadier who works from the MoD's London HQ.

Performing similar clandestine tasks, usually behind enemy lines, they now also have a joint selection process and even work together on missions.

But the Special Air Service is almost always given the public credit for work carried out by the SBS who, without their own cap badge or official logo, are much harder to identify in the field.

SBS troopers were left fuming after the heroic work of five of their members during a Taliban prison revolt in Mazar-e-Sharif in Afghanistan last November.

The SBS team rescued a CIA man from the hands of fanatical prisoners who had already killed his colleague.

But though the troopers have been put up for the Congressional Medal of Honour - America's version of the Victoria Cross - they were wrongly identified as an SAS squad. A Whitehall source said: "The SBS seldom gets the credit it deserves for very brave and important work. "A sharper motto and an individual cap badge will help."

How the f*ck can it change from 'Not by Strength, by Guile' to 'By Strength and Guile' - It's contradicting the original motto

F*ckin' Bollockheads, that's all I'm going to say - Then again, could be just another Daily Bullsh*t story from the Mirror

Stuey,

Hate to dissappoint you mate, but the story is based loosely on truth. The motto changed to "By strength and guile" quite some time ago. As for the SBS needing a new cap badge to prevent them being difficult to identify on operations, I'm sure we can all make our minds up about that!

I don't know about anyone else but I deeply resent the use of the term "Logo" to describe our Cap Badge (even when used by an ignorant, overpaid, overfed, underworked, ill informed Press reptile) .... Sainsbury's & Tesco have "logos" ... Our cap badge, has a significant History attached to its evolution ... of which we are & can be justifiably proud !

That said,I seriously doubt that any S.B. Member would willingly "trade in" his RM Cap Badge for anything else ... on the basis that it's hard to improve on the best !

Any member of the Press, interested enough or bright enough to read these pages ... take note ... Knobbers! :fist:
