A Virtual March On Downing Street

On Saturday 6th December there will be a virtual march on Downing Street . This is about requesting a referendum on the new European Union Constitution. To take part you should go to www.Referendum04.co.uk.
Now most you should be able to do this whith out to much effort.

But isn't the usual criticism about politicians that they never own up to anything - it's always someone else's fault? They all model themselves on the 'Bart Simpson Model of Culpability'

He certainly can't be accused of that.

I have never voted Labour, but one thing I will give B Liar credit for is his charismatic attitude, he comes across better than any other Socialist (if that is what the 'new Labour party' still is) I dread to think of TwoJags preaching his gospels according to the Seamans Union. I really wonder what happens in private when say Claire Short meets Robin Cook or Dennis Skinner, oh to be a fly on the wall!

it does amuse me how most of the "left" labour MP's are miles more to the right than most tories i cant help but just think where did the labour aprty go?

Fair point. Problem is none of us has any real idea of what, or who, we'd want to lead us. And with what policies.

I wrote to my MP saying (not working, low income - less than the 'quoted poverty level') that the only fair tax is income tax. He said that there are fair grounds for putting tax on petrol, for example.

So the guy who benefited from reducing the basic level of income tax to 10% is OK? But the increase in petrol duty immediately wiped out the benefits of the reduction on lower rate tax payers. Because the increase in petrol taxes (for the working class car driver) wiped out the benefits of the tax reduction - and some!

OK I was paying 40% tax at the time. None if it made one jot of difference to my lifestyle. But for a low income family [proudly me, now!!] it makes a tremendous difference.

I look forward to meeting him at his next 'clinic'. Being Labour he might relish the benefits the govt have brought to his local A&E Dept.

Well, as requested, i e-mailed downing street. I also e-mailed my local MP, Mark Todd, explaining the same to him, His reply follows,

Thank you for your e-mail.

The Government has recently published the draft EU constitution and the ammendments it is seeking. Representitives of all EU member states are meeting to make changes to fit their perceptions. We thus have no idea yet of the constitution`s precise form. Currently its most substantial benefits are:

1, To codify several different treaties into one document

2, To increase the power of National Parliaments in certain respects

3, To define the limits of EU powers

4, To simplify decision-making in the EU

None of these suggest the need for a referendum but, as I`ve said, changes may occur which would alter my view. We have never previously held a referendum on any EU treaty. The Maastricht treaty (signed under the last government) substantially changed the powers of the EU parliament and increased the range of matters where qualified majority voting was allowed rather than unanimity. Of course, the one referendum that has been held on EU matters- on whether we stayed in the EEC in 1975- was held under a Labour Government, so we don`t have a closed mind on the matter should there be adequate grounds. The government has made it clear that it is in no declared negotiating position.
