I just got back from 2 weeks TA training at pirbright, and had a blast...
We covered most of the basics in brief, i.e. field craft, weapon handling, map reading etc, had a good time met allot of good people too...
The average day was from 5 am to 7:30 8:00 pm had lots to fit in, most of the training staff were northern or Scottish, from one of the border regts and one cpl from the Scottish highland fusiliers "asshole" we were told at the begging of the course that it wasn’t going to be easy, and for some this was the case, we did two 4 1/2 mile tabs in the first two days carrying 15 ILBs and had a few people give up after that, then three days later we had the cft which was as I’m sure you all know carrying a certain amount of weight over a set distance 4 3/4 miles for us in no less than 55 mins (I think) and no more than an hour, we all came in, in 56 mins...
In the first week we did what seemed to be an endless amount of classroom work, weapons (skill at arms) first aid, nbc (
The ranges...
The first shoot we did I’ve never been so nervous in my life, and didn’t enjoy it at all, although when the second day on the ranges came the nerves had gone and we all started to get into the swing of things, there was some quite good shooting going on to, my best scores were -
Prone- 170(would of been 110 if I hadn’t of snatched the last round)
Sitting- 195
Squatting- 200 (damn un comfy position if your there to long)
Kneeling- 180 (same as squatting its not nice too go on gravel)
Standing-190
These are all on a 100 m range.

What can I say, I’ve never been more uncomfortable before, they called it a respirator confidence test, and it went wrong as soon as I walked in the chamber, my respirator didn’t fit properly as I found out, and I could feel the effects straight away, when it came to taking it off and saying name rank and n.o. I couldn’t breath anyway, I was thrown out the door just before passing out as I hit the floor in shortly after saying 2517...
Ok one last thing as I know this has been a long thread, has anyone on here served in the Scottish guards around the dates of 80-86 in 2 company as there was a guy called Colin Phillips on this course who says he was in the Falklands, I have no reason to suspect him of being a Walter, and found him to be a really lovely bloke, just like to know a little more, as I didn’t want to ask him directly about it...
Thanks and its good to be back
