back from pirbright

Post by lew »

Hello again guys...

I just got back from 2 weeks TA training at pirbright, and had a blast...

We covered most of the basics in brief, i.e. field craft, weapon handling, map reading etc, had a good time met allot of good people too...

The average day was from 5 am to 7:30 8:00 pm had lots to fit in, most of the training staff were northern or Scottish, from one of the border regts and one cpl from the Scottish highland fusiliers "asshole" we were told at the begging of the course that it wasn’t going to be easy, and for some this was the case, we did two 4 1/2 mile tabs in the first two days carrying 15 ILBs and had a few people give up after that, then three days later we had the cft which was as I’m sure you all know carrying a certain amount of weight over a set distance 4 3/4 miles for us in no less than 55 mins (I think) and no more than an hour, we all came in, in 56 mins...

In the first week we did what seemed to be an endless amount of classroom work, weapons (skill at arms) first aid, nbc ( ) theory of marksmen ship etc so the and to cap it off a 24 hour exercise on the Friday, ration packs aren’t bad, stag was cold but goes surprisingly fast...

The ranges...

The first shoot we did I’ve never been so nervous in my life, and didn’t enjoy it at all, although when the second day on the ranges came the nerves had gone and we all started to get into the swing of things, there was some quite good shooting going on to, my best scores were -

Prone- 170(would of been 110 if I hadn’t of snatched the last round)

Sitting- 195

Squatting- 200 (damn un comfy position if your there to long)

Kneeling- 180 (same as squatting its not nice too go on gravel)

Standing-190

These are all on a 100 m range.

NBC

What can I say, I’ve never been more uncomfortable before, they called it a respirator confidence test, and it went wrong as soon as I walked in the chamber, my respirator didn’t fit properly as I found out, and I could feel the effects straight away, when it came to taking it off and saying name rank and n.o. I couldn’t breath anyway, I was thrown out the door just before passing out as I hit the floor in shortly after saying 2517......

Ok one last thing as I know this has been a long thread, has anyone on here served in the Scottish guards around the dates of 80-86 in 2 company as there was a guy called Colin Phillips on this course who says he was in the Falklands, I have no reason to suspect him of being a Walter, and found him to be a really lovely bloke, just like to know a little more, as I didn’t want to ask him directly about it...

Thanks and its good to be back

Welcome back Jack. Glad you had a good time. Why did shooting make you nervous though? I loved putting metal mosquitto's down range, must be the American in me. Well glad you did well. :D

Hello Lew!

Now didn't Uncle Pasha say that you'd walk it? Well done my friend! Don't worry yourself about your shooting scores too much as you'll be doing shed loads more during your continuation training. The first of which will probably NBC (sorry), but don't worry if you do your eating, drinking cannister changing etc. drills correctly then you won't feel a thing.

I take it that you are now fluent in "Jockonese"? Talking of which, a sergeant in my squadron served in the Scots Guards during Op Corporate (he was at Mount Tumbledown with the mortar platoon) so I'll ask him if the name rings a bell. Once again, welcome back, it is good to hear from you again!
Top regards mate!

Nice one lew. A good read.

Its more or less the kinda thing i'll be doing on my CIC late next year. Got plenty of time to get fit.

As for the shooting...yeah i'd be also nervous as f@#k. I remeber Back 3 years ago when in the air cadets and shooting the L98 cadet rifle. That made me nearly shit my pants

The NBC thing sounds dodgy..not looking forward to that lol

anyway matey..P.S what does tabbing mean again? (tactical ..blah blah) its a run right?

whitey, it made me nervous as we had a week theory of lessons in the class room, we were then meant to have a further 3 days in a sat range (a type of electronic firing range) but after our first 20 minute period on it, the training team turned around and said that we didn’t have time for the next sat range lessons and would be firing straight away, so we were pretty much thrown in the deep end, and I found my self with four people to my left and right who were also sh*ting themselves one of which couldn’t grasp the basic concept of keeping the rifle pointing down the range :o...

Pasha you were right about having to mach everywhere, but you didn’t mention not being aloud to talk to your mates whilst coming back from scoff, I got told off for that, and called a civvi prick by a certain RLC cpl a few times, I was also introduced to the thinking position as well...

Cheers for the warm welcome backs guys...
