Transfer to mpgs

Post by smoggy90 »

I am currently serving in the RAF but i have a child on the way and me and the mother are seperated so i need to leave the Air force so i can be closer to home for when my child arrives. But there is no work were i live and the only job i can seem to find that is of a similair wage to my current service pay is to join mpgs..granted its not the greatest job but its all i can find. Im only 20 years old and have served just over three years. Does anybody no if i can transfer straight over or do i have to leave the Air force and re-apply?? any help would be appreciated thanks

Is that mpgs on an Army base then? (I'm a bit confused!)
My first thought was 'if there's a military base to be mpgs at, why can't you stay in the military?' Yes the wages might be comparable, but don't forget all the extra costs of food and accommodation etc that you won't get subsidised if you leave. I'm not saying that you haven't, but you should really think very carefully about whether leaving is absolutely the right thing for you, or whether you might end up regretting it in the future. You should be able to discuss this in confidence with someone at work, whether that's your line manager or the padré.
If you have joint custody of your child you are entitled to a quarter so that you have somewhere to have them for visits as well, so also bear that in mind.
You can have peace.
Or you can have freedom.
Don't ever count on having both at once.

Like i said im in the RAF but i live in devon and there is no raf camps in my area. Thats y i am thinking of the mpgs becasue i will hae all the benefits of military life but will not have to go away wich i want because i dont want to be leaving my son for 4 months when he arrives in feb. I already have a house were i live so the price of rent etc isnt a matter its just i want to be here for my son as much as possible

I hope this doesn't sound too intrusive or harsh but..you say you and your ex are seperated what amount of time with your child will you get? I only ask because if its the odd weekend or some time during the holidays then you may as well stay in the RAF, this way you'll be earning a decent wage with chances of promotion etc. If you go to the MPGS then you could be based anywhere in Devon or the Southwest, and still only getting limited access. What happens if your ex moves away?

Sounds like a real dilema for you but you are only 20 and do you really want to be on the main gate at some camp for the forseeable future? If the answer is yes then crack on, if No, then you could also try for the MOD Police as they have a large force in the SW (Plymouth for example).

Good luck
