RAC - thinking about enlisting.

Post by Mister E »

Hi all,

First time posting on this site :)

I'm thinking about nipping into the local recruiting office and having a chat about signing up but I had a few questions I wanted to ask folk that had already served/are serving. Like the title says I'd been hoping to join a regiment within the Royal Armoured Corps.

First off, my folks are completely, 110% dead against the idea (mostly the politics and what not behind the current conflict) - they know I've been on and off with the idea for the past five years or so and every time I've mentioned casually it's been a complete "shutters-down" on their part but I want to tell them seriously this time that this is what I want to do. How would I go about explaining this in a way that'd get their "ok" on the whole thing? (I'll be 18 in a few weeks, I know that soon I could go join without their signature but I'd be a massive weight off if I knew they were behind me on this)

Second, what's it like day to day in an armour regiment? What qualifications would I need to become part of a tank crew and could I get them "on-the-job"?

Third, if I go ahead with enlisting what should I do to prep for it and what should I look out for? I read that basic is a kick in the arse for those that come in completely unfit and unprepared.

That's all for the moment.

Cheers :)

Cheers for that.

I'd be looking at the 1st RTR (scottish born and bred :D ). I might have read this wrong but is the 1st solely involved in CBRN operations or do they operate main battle tanks as well?

As for your parents, like you said just talk to them seriously. My family want me to go to university and earn lots of money (probably so I put them in a decent home ;)), but that doesn't suit me at all, I've thought about it and know I want to join the army. Uni is always my back up plan. They'll come round eventually and realise that it is what you want to do.

As for fitness, find out the requirements for the RAC and work towards and beyond that. Go out running now - not day after day though, and also focus on press ups and sit ups. Eat and drink well.

Hi Nero.
Did you have to trim your avatar a little?
I only ask as I've seen it before with some obscene remark as a footer.
Wecome aboard by the way,I don't think you got the welcoming spiel from the mods.
And to you Mister E,enjoy
