I believe at the moment cell phones can't be used in Afghanistan. I may be wrong but unless it has chnged since last year when my unit went all Cellphones were handed in to Admin staff for when you return to the UK. It is all Op Security Stuff. Hopefully someone who has been more recent will clarify this.

I think that the Army did not want pictures appearing on the internet like the ones that have embarrassed the Americans

Depending on where he is contact by email is probably the easiest as the big bases have a good setup and Infrastructure. Telephone calls are outgoing landline only as far as i am aware. And again more so in the bigger bases not the patrol bases although this will come in time as will the net and such like.

Hope this helps

As far as I am aware the lads aren't allowed to use their personal phones out there, they can however call if they are at a base which has the facilities. I know a us marine who said that the telephone system they use in their base used to cut out if anyone used key words which could lead to information being passed on. The reboot time was 45 mins. Pretty funny if you ask me!
