59 Commando

Post by Nav »

Hi lads, I know this should be on the Army forum but since they obviously have a close relation to the Marines, I thought this would be the better forum for the post.

I've had a look at their official site and so far it looks spot on. I could just do with some more information on their role and so on?! I have been using the search button but hopefully this forum has some knowledge as well.

Any and all information is greatly appreciated.

59 Indep Cdo Sqn RE is no more it is now 24 Commando as it has been enlarged to Regiment strength. (or is in the process of)

The Sqn moved from Seaton Barracks Plymouth to RMB Chivenor in 1995 along with Cdo Logs RM.

Its primary function is to provide engineering support to 3 Cdo Brigade RM and also has responsibilities to support Army units. Such as minefiled laying and clearence, beach support, bridging, building things and blowing shit up.

All ranks are Commando trained with the exception of Recce Troop who are not only Commando trained but also Para trained and have also completed P Coy. Recce troop recce potential engineering sites, landing sites (beach recce) and heli/airborne DZ's, and provide a forward observation element too.

Troop level deployments in support of individual Commando units and Squadron deployments are the norm, with Recce troop also supporting the Brigade Recce Troop and SF.

Prior to the All Arms Commando Course individuals are also required to pass the pre-commando course held at Chivenor and on the Brecon Beacons.

There are also RAMC, RLC and REME elements to the Squadron.

I served with the Squadron on and off as an attached medic between 1991 and 1996 on both 3 Cdo deployments and "Army" exercises. Since that time the Sqn has evolved and so has its taskings and training, so for upto date info visit the Sqn website or phone the AFCO. You have to obviously join the RE and pass training/Trade training prior to attempting the AACC and joining the Sqn.

They are the bees knees when it comes to doing their job regardless of where, when or how, they just do it like any other member of the Royal Engineers, but better I reckon. :D
