That will be at Chestys in Hindelang then? Tell him Taff says "Guten Tag"

I used to work there! Great place, pop down the road for a wet at slide or glide, also a good place. Tuesdays grab karakoke at the flying scotsman down in Sonthofen, Paul who runs it may even do a gig up at Chestys.

Viel Spass!

Aye, it's that Bavarian surprise thing:
http://www.englishguesthouse.co.uk/BS/home.htm

Well, not sure how strict the curfew is going to be but apparently most nights are midnight, except the last which is 2am where we get a run ashore somewhere...

"Taff"... I'm sure he'd have met more than one :P Infact, theres about 7 matelots going and 1 of them is a taff :D

Gonna be stuck on a bus with 6 other matelots, 32 booties, some FOST staff and a few random senior rates...for 16 hours :/ Guess who's gonna be calling "naked coach" :D lol.

Well ask him how many "Taffs" worked and lived in the village and worked for him, may narrow it down

Hindelang is a small village about 8k from the next town of size which is Sonthofen. You'll ski up the road or down at the Fellhorn/Nebelhorn above Oberstdorf about 20k from Chestys.

The curfew is imposed by the local Alpine Lodge that governs Military training, too many blokes were creaming in and breaking things after a night on the pop. Also we are talking about smal Bavarian Alpine villages and Herman treasures his peace and quiet. Alot of retreats in the area full of spars etc, so last thing needed is naked bootnecks running amock at zero owe zulu fart oclock.

Chesty has his own bar, cheap and well stocked, has full sky telly and a Wii, slide and glide is a bar/scran hole, that just offers a change of location but not much more and is more expensive. Run by an ex signals lad (and his family - it changes hands so often within the family its hard to work out whos who) http://www.slideorglide.de good phots of local area.

If the weather is shite, you may pop over to garmisch and the yank PX, and maybe the castle from chitty chitty bang bang, dont mock its a great place as it happens, well worth the visit. If you goto to Garmisch, escape the crowd and head up the zugspitze, highest alp in the german alps, half of its Austrian.

From Chestys place all the alps you see are also along the line of the austrian border.

If anyone quotes cheap fags etc, head down to Sonthofen and the lodge has a NAAFI, cheaper fags still.

Behind the main strasse in Sonthofen is a sex shop for vids and dildos.

Brits are banned from all nightclubs unless expats living and working local, too many fights so the locals have said fark orf!

Loads of outdoor shops, the best from living there is down the road from chestys, head straight down from his, across the cross roads x2, hang a left on the pavement, then next right, good for kit and cheapish.

The beginners ski site is up the hill from chestys, up the twisty oberjoch pass on the deutsche strasse, a road that runs the entire border with austria. theres blue red and black runs depending on snow cover.

You wont be the only military lads, the SF types will be mincing about on their bergfuehrers course, theres the alpine centre in Sonthofen and lodges at wertach and oberstdorf, you'll ping jo military by the red fleeces and trees tops.

Chesty and his mrs have huskies outside too, dont wind them up as chesty will flash and hes a tough nut.

Dont try and pull Kirsty as she bats for the other side, I did snog her once but failed to convince her of the error of her ways

I lived out there for over a year, hoofing place, you'll love it.

Tbh, I've never skiied before so the chance would be cool, but I'm not all that fussy considering the alternatives...

If there's snow:
Week of skiing

If there's not:
Mountain biking
Kayaking
Climbing (indoor + out apparently?)
Absailing
Mountaineering
..etc.

How old is this Kirsty lass? May have to try my matelot charm and jesters 2-step on her :D

Just got my kitlist today:
Civvies with appropriate warm weather kit
Waterproof Jacket and Trousers (not DPM_
Hat and Gloves
Walking Boots
Fleece jacket
Flasks
Sunglasses
Day Sack
PT kit with training shoes, swimming kit and cycling shorts
Dhobi gear
Sunscreen
Passport, EHIC, ID, Money
DVD player/ipod/books (for coach)
Anything else you'd advise? Also, any other tips/places to go/places not to go that are worth passing on to the other lads? I've made a note of the shops and slide&glide. Also, what's getting around like? Is everything within walking distance or can we nick some bikes from Chestys?

Merci in advance.

The main Bus stop is down the road from the shop I mentioned, just follow the main drag down the hill and its on the right.

Oberstdorf has an irish pub, 5 min walk from train station. Nearest train station to you is Sonthofen. Herman buses and trains are on one timetable and connect really well and are punctual. At the bus station is a tourist info place and they speak english.

Down the hill from chesty and toward slideorglide is a little climbing shop run by an old mate whos also a medic (german but fluent in english and abit of a character)

Kirsty is early twenties and a jock

The kayaking is superb, climbing is also good and theres a guy called Thomas who runs a rope centre and climbing place on the way to Oberstdorf, also speaks english. Wertach is the UK military paragliding centre so you could ask for airtime and a tandem if they are flying.

If theres no snow up the road then you will probably get to ski up the fellhorn or Nebelhorn, high up and some good bars.

Opposite side of the valley to chestys and a short walk is a lift that in summer takes mountain bikers upt to the top of the hill in the black and white pic above, has an excellent downhill run, in winter you can sledge it which is farking awesome fun, wear old waterprof clothes as you will cream in lots.

Most guys onthe summer trip who went cycling, just bimble into Sonthofen for a nose around, its about 8k down the road and is abit of a climb back up. As you enter the town keep going straight past the large Obi (like B&Q) then at the interchange is a large outdoor shop, looks good from outside but its cheap, good if you have forgotten anything and dont mind it trashed. If you then hang a right and head straight you will come into the town centre, it has a good chicken resturant (most kraut places are a varient of ham, cheese and bread) theres a diving shop down by the train station. The main shopping strasse is mainly local shops for local people, but theres one up toward the top that is a pucker outdoor shop with cheaper than UK north face gear. Oppossite this is a small alley, go down there and at the end is a sex shop as mentioned before. Cash only. Apparantly so Im told :o Out the shop and turn right and right again and theres a bank with a cashpoint (again so Im told by the person who went to the counter with loads of porn and no cash and then had to make a trek to the bank and back again for all my....ooops...his porn!
The swimming pool in Sonthofen has slides and tubes etc.

Theres a hole in the wall in Hindelang on the main village street, head from chestys down the hill to the crossroads, hang a right, under the bridge hang a left, head on in and you'll stumble across it, I think the first one is sparkasse. Or head to corss roads again hang a left, along the drag to the sharp corner, bear right then left and theres one on the right , looks like a small shop and its inside (use card to open door) I mention this as its the most popular question I got asked. Most Herman shops etc dont take cards unless they are local EU cards. Credit cards are frowned upon in Germany and they make no difference with debit cards as its all Visa to them. But hole in the walls take Brit cards.

Chestys is non smoking, fags can be bought in slide but expensive, or you'll find fag machines on the walls of some houses that take coins, when I was there last it was 4 euros 50 cents for 20.

The water in the alps is awesome as the beer, try a weisen beer with a splash of coke, follow up with a jagermeister or a grappa, good times!

theres nowhere else really, unless you fancy a drive in a bus or hire car. Hitlers nest is down near Berchestgarten but its about 3 hours and quicker to head upto Munich and across.

Kempten is the nearest large town/city, you'll pass it on the way to Sonthofen on the autobahn A7, large mall and behind it is a discount outdoor place and a few other shops too.

As you head from Stuttgart toward the A8/A7 interchange to head south is Ulm, large shopping centre and the worlds highest church steeple, on the left on the A7 as you change motorways and about 15k into bavaria is pfaffenhofen another village I briefly lived in. The other side of Ulm is Blaubeuren where Rommel is buried and also has a monestry with a bright blue pool.

errrrr thats it really, the Alps are the Alps, mountains, skiing, cycling, climbing, yomping, beer, germans, thats it.

I will warn you though Sonthofen is like the Brecon of the Alps, strange locals and full of squaddies - Brit and Kraut. One Macdonalds, no fast food past about 10-ish so stock up on nutty for post beer late night scran.

remember none of the germans you will ever meet where ever Nazis! This is remember southern bavaria, birthplace of the Nazi party, but most of the old members seem to have emigrated :o . "ich bin keine Nazi!"

Theres a castle in Sonthofen on the way out to Oberstdorf, you'll see it better on the way back from Oberstdorf, apparantly Hitler got his head down there according to local legend, but in fact it was mainly Hitler Youth and is now the German Armys MP and Language school.

You could always ask the locals to point out the local sites of where the German concentration camps were, may get slotted mind.

The cops are armed, and dont ask questions, just lock you up, drunkiness isnt tolerated and the local UK military will see you hanged if you get in the shit. Mainly as most are now locals and are married to locals. The ex Co lives in Hindelang and his Son is an instructor. You'll see a few ex pat brits, like me mainly ex military. Just be aware that some of the ex pats are senior ranks and even though in civvies will know where you are from and will speak to chesty who in turn will speak to your boss. Chesty is ex LI, his Mrs Tina is Italian and a lovely lady, just dont cross her!

I will promise you one thing, both Chesty and Tina will give you the warmest of welcomes and bend over backwards to make your stay top notch, you couldnt wish for a better place to stay or better instructors or a better area of the alps.

Ask Chesty when you see him "hast du mein tintenfisch gesehen?"

Viel Spass
