Royal Marines Commando - It's a State of Mind.

Post by DWW »

Hi folks,

It's been a while since I've posted much, so to cut a long story short:

I did my POC in 2002, and failed due to shin splints, and over the last 5 years have seen various orthapaedic consultants, physiotherapists and podiatrists. I have had gait analysis, orthotic insoles, bone pecking, accupuncture, deep tissue massage, compartment pressure tests, x-rays, MRI scans and rehabilitation exercise programmes. These have failed to either identify or cure the problem.

My recent, and final, consultation revealed to me that there is no option for any further physical treatment, either through the NHS or privately. I have been informed that there is categorically nothing that can be done to cure, or indeed find, the problem. I have also been advised that consequently running through the pain will not cause any damage, and that it is down to my strength of mind as to how far/fast/frequently I can run. I find this a little galling as I have been told time and again over the last 5 years (and through a couple of abortive attempts to join the forces) to halt running immediately when I feel pain, which incidentally is around the 3 minute mark.

This would appear to be a significant barrier to overcome, but I have ran twice in the last 10 days, one 4 miler and a 5. While the pain is really bad I have kept going, and the following few days have been hobbling a little, and waiting for the pain to subside before running again (including in about half an hour :) ).

My question (finally!) is thus:

Does anyone have any similar experience or knowledge of this, and in your opinions would I be wasting my time to attempt a PRMC in a few months? Is it possible, on top of everything else in RT that tests you, to succeed with such a condition?

It's a state of mind.

I personally think speed marching would hammer you mate and remember you're still going to be doing long, hard runs after training.

Hey,
I really feel for you man as my first time around at Lympstone I had to leave due to interior shin splints. However it's now 2 years later, I'm not running due to an operation I've just had, but when I was running shin splints didn't seem too much of a problem.
For me what really helped them out was blasting my calf muscles with resistance exercises. The main one that worked well for me was (sorry if my typed instructions are not great)

- Stand straight with you back against the wall - Put your feet about the same distance as the length of your foot away from the wall. - Lift your toes off the ground so that your heels are the only part of your foot touching the ground - and do sets of raising and lowering your toes never letting the balls of your feet completely touch the ground.
If I was you I wouldnt re-join untill you have completely sorted out the problem! Why risk going back to training and having your shins take you out again, unless you're in a rush?
My philosophy is.. don't go in until you know you can do it.
I've been told that running through it works for a lot of people so there's a good chance that will work.
Good luck with it all!

After all those medical experts and interviews and so on this seems like a very stupid question but do you ice your legs after you runs?
Yeah, it seems a silly question but I thought I would ask anyway.

cheers

Done that exercise until I was blue in the face (shouldn't have held my breath lol) with no discernible results.

Unfortunately, as I said, there is no medical way to sort out this problem. They're going to hurt regardless, so as you say, I just have to run through it.

Mr Kiwi, I Have done it religiously, and it helps a little with recovery time, so I do it when I can, but I dont want to come to rely on it as I won't always be able to do it.

DWW. I had bad problems's with my leg's and I know how you feel ok.
I hope you are successful in your ambition's. Please, just don't get too hyped up about it as when you have your medical, they tend to pick on anything that can affect your performance.

I wish you all the best.

Just make sure you're fit enough mate. That's the most important thing.

I'm seriously puzzled about your leg's. I've never heard of anything like what you have.

Absolutely mate, I'm going to make sure I can go through some decent times before I'll consider filling in the magic form again.

Neither has anyone else

My thoughts exactly. He compared it to brain damage: 'Just because we can't work out what's wrong with it doesn't mean it doesn't hurt.'

You reckon?!?!

Cheers for the support mate. Appreciate it.
