Some Help Please
Hey guys, i was just wanting some advie from people who have been in a similar position. I am currently studying for a degree at Sheffield Hallam, I am a year and a half into my course. I will be finishing my degree in spring 09 i was just wondering when the best time to begin my application to become a Young Officer would be? I have heard that training commences once a year from September, so i carnt see it being possible to finish my degree and get the POC and AIB in before September!! I am already chomping at the bit to get going, and i dont think i could wait another year on top of what i have already had to wait. My other oppition is to gain a PGCE in teaching from my degree so i could potenially study that for the year after i finish at uni whilst the application process is ongoing. Thing is with that id be 23 by the time i apply and feel time is running out and as i said i can wait to begin the process so when should i get up and running with it?
Alright mate
If you want to be an officer straight after uni, the first thing you should do is think when is the best time to do a POC and AIB? September, December, March? Then apply 6 months before your desired POC time, giving you enough time to get your application sorted.
Batch selection runs from September to June with the final commissions board in July- YO batch entry date beginning of September.
Bearing in mind you'll do your POC in 3rd year and being final year = hard work (or should be!) So, plan around when is good for you- bear in mind dissertations in 2nd term, doing POC/AIB prep then whilst trying to punch out a hoofing dissie will be emotional, possibly to the detriment of your degree.
I'm not applying this year as it's in my best interest to knuckle down and work. This is with the intention of having a year out next year to fully prepare for POC and AIB, whilst picking up RMR again. I feel this way I can get my degree out the way and then crack on with Royal. It's not how I wanted it to go but its what my folks and tutors believe is the 'mature' option.
