I'm not really a expert on running but i'm sure someone on here can give you some better advice than i could.
You could try fartlek training i think its called..when your running, after you have warmed up pick a point and sprint to it then jog for a while then sprint again, between lamp posts for example I used to do this around the valley and it helped alot

Ah ok.. I don't think I know you but my little bro does.
The best thing you can do is go across to wynstay and ask the owner for some advice.
You probably know who he is and that he's ex - RM but I don't want to put his name up here. He was a colour sergeant I think and served during the first gulf war. He still does a fair bit and i'm sure he would be able to give you some ideas.
