Pilot

Post by scrappy1 »

I am very interested in becoming a pilot in the RAF and have a few questions about it. Firstly, i have 5 A*s 4 As 1 B and 1 C at GCSE, and have recently started my AS levels in Maths, Physics, Chemistry and Law. I have heard it is very competitive but would good A levels in these subjects give me a good chance of getting in? I know it isn't just about academic results but i am a very active person as well. I am a trained lifeguard, working regularly, and i also currently play football for 2 teams. At the moment i don't know much about the RAF but i am willing to put in the time and effort to achieve this as i know this is a necessary to have a chance.

Also, if you are accepted as a pilot, do you do basic training like everyone else or is it different? Where about do pilots train? Finally, when would be the best time to go to my local RAF careers place to apply to be a pilot?
Thanks

hi mate welcome to the forum

id say you are best to head down to the afco as soon as

your training will be at RAF Cranwell with all the other officers.

one thing do you have perfect 20-20 vision? if not you will not be able to join as a pilot.

they also like officers to have either duke of edinborough or voulentery work under your belt to show integrity.

but like i said go to the afco. they will sort you out.

To get to your Impossible you've got to start somewhere. You've got to start with that first big, really important step.

Thanks a lot guys. So, do pilots do exactly the same thing as officers for training, then go into specialised training? I don't know for sure, but i know my eyesight is good as i have had no problems with it in medicals and so on. At the afco, do they give you more information about the job and you get a date booked for interview or is it just straight down to application and interviews?

To be honest mate, you are best off just heading down to the AFCO. There is no pressure to join, the guys there will give you all the info you need and if you have any questions they will try their best to answer them.

Do you live near any RAF stations? If so, it might be worthwhile looking on their websites to see if any of them offer work experience placements - will be good for the info you will gain and look good if you decide to apply, as it shows you are being proactive.

Oh and as someone else has already said do it ASAP as you can apply for a Sixth Form Scholarship.
