Alernate to RM

Post by jakeh83 »

Hey people, Unfortunatley i wasn't allowed entry to the RM because i have a tattoo on my neck :( i was wondering what army alternatives there are? i know of 29 commando reg and the paras but cant seem to find anything else. I only ask cos ive been training for the last 3 months and at peak fitness and would like to use this in a commando role. (army are fine with the tat)

Special forces?

The others have been named that I can think of.

If the RM turned you down due to a tattoo wouldnt the army do the same as it probably was MOD policy not just RM.

I'm pretty sure spiderbloke is right. If you are serious about recruitment all you can do is get it removed. I am assuming that as it is on your neck it isn't too big, and the laser treatment should set you back around £1500-£2000.

Yeah....good luck with that  .

I don't mean to point out the obvouse here but they have that rule there so you don't stick out of parade etc. it's not that they don't want you, if that is the case I don't think they will be so shy to try and put it as kindly as they can.

Your best alternative to the Marines would definately be the Paras, you'll be doing the same sort of operations you would be doing if you'd joined the Marines.

29 Cdo are an artillery Regiment and so would not be conducting the same type of operations as the Marines ie; clearing buildings/trenches and seizing ground etc... or at least that's not their main job.

If your dead keen on the RM's then why not have the tat removed? Failing that then your choices in the Army for a green lid are as you have said 29 and also 59 Cdo who are RE's. Plus in Cdologregtrm there are a fair few bods from the RLC, RCT, REME, APC and then 3 CDOBDERM HQ & Sigs Sqn has Royal Signals bods attached. Not many but a few, they deal with stuff like Crypto Graphic and suchlike. All very Secret, in fact you would have to be Positive Vetted in order to do it.

To be Positive Vetted is when your allowed to deal with stuff up to Top Secret. They check up on you, your family, your habits, your friends habits, your political views, your sexual likes and dislikes to make sure you can be trusted. You'd be amazed at just how deep they delve into both you and your families past!!!

The Paras are fine but forget about SF until you have done at least two years in the armed forces after that time then you can apply for either the SAS or the SBS, as both are now open to allcomers these days regardless of what part of the Armed Forces you start out in.

Why not think in terms of the regular Infantry? These days they are doing the same stuff as all the high profile units like the Cdo's and Paras and doing the job damn well. The Royal Anglian Regt is beating the crap out of the Taliban in Afganistan as we speak. Red lid, Green Lid, Black Lid, Brown Lid does it matter these days?

We only mainly hear about the Cdo's and Paras due to the fact that they have a much higher profile than the other units with much better PR teams. Whatever unit you join your still going to have to knuckle down and graft for what you want anyway.

Can't see why they said no to you, there was a lad in my troop at ctc who had his name tattood on his neck, way above the collar line, clearly visible above any shirt.

Suggestion- Go Army. As Artist said all regiments are performing in a fantastic manner. Purely my idea and the way I would go based on some experience. Apply to join the superb PWRR a combination of the old Royal Hampshire Regiment (The Tigers) and the Queen's Regiment formerly the senior British regiment of the line. 1.PWRR had a superb tour in Iraq
in 2004 with a VC and countless other honours. If you get a chance go to your local library and get a copy of the very good book titled 'Dusty Warriors' by Richard Holmes who is a history professor at London University and was a Brigadier with the Queen's TA.
Now the Queen's regiment historically was a chummy regiment with the RM. Both units exchanged officers and NCOs'. Those going to the RM had to pass the All Arms CCse. The association remains despite the name change and because of prior history PWRR men can always get a slot on the AACcse.
Good luck !
Chas RMV-RM-RMV/R & Queen's 6/7(V)HSF
RM., Colonial Police & Queen's Regt HSF.

Go Para regt mate. After a few years you could transfer to SFSG and work alongside SF

If u can get into the army and still want to be a commando, join the 1 Rifles they r the infantry commando battalion they have just been formed also joining the rifles gives u a huge choice from commando to armoured infantry across 5 reg battalions, with a long proud history the Rifles would give the RM or paras a very good run for there money any day
