RUNNING 1.5MILES IN 9.00 MINS HELP ME!!!!
nearly Two years ago i was a flabby 19 stone lad who wanted to be a PARA. i worked my bo****ks off hours on end, day in day out, joining a Boxing gym and all, and after all the hard work i had bombed my weight off down to 12 stone.
I went to my careers office full of confidence. i had to do my 1.5mile run. it didnt turn out the way i thaught. stupidly i hadnt done enough training outdoors as i had indoors on the treadmill. i had run it in 10.mins 30 seconds
i was gutted, thinking i hadnt tried hard enough.
If i run 3 miles a day, everyday, will my time gradually get quicker or am i totally buggered. I go down the gym everyday and run a 1.5miles on 14.5kph on the treadmill (aswell as other stuff
). Can anybody please help me with fitness guides to help me with my 1.5mile run, quicken my pace, lengthen stride ect. anything to help, PLEASE PEASE PLEASE!!! much appreciated
have to do it by January 2008[/b]

Right I'm no running coach but I have heard that a brilliant way to increase stride length and frequency is hill sprints, they do how ever have there draw backs (very high impact) The general advice I have herd seems to have seen is do them no more than 2 a week (I only do 1 session a week) . cheek this out...

I also wouldn't advise running everyday. 4 times a week is enough (especially if coupled up with circuit training, swimming, cycling etc) as you get fitter you can obviously do more, some people run every week day but 7 days a week, week in week out most probably wont be good for you.
Try and mix your running up... long distance, intervals, 3 milers, hill sprints, HIIT etc
Finally try and do as much out doors as you can as this will be what you run on most of the time in training treadmills are good for general fitness but if you want to train specifically for the military out door running is much better... and in my opinion much more fun and challenging with all the added hills etc
Best of luck
Hope that is of some use.

Did you fail recruit selection for not being fit enough?
10 1/2 minutes for 1.5 miles is acceptable (not fantastic, but acceptable) for a potential Parachute Regiment recruit at selection.
10 1/2 minutes is the maximum passing time for the PFT run for serving soldiers. I'm pretty sure that standards are lower during recruit selection.
They've recently changed the Army Careers website, so unfortunately I can't find any links to show you the acceptable scores.
I'm sure Sandy will be along soon though, he should definitely know the score.

The time for Paras is 9:18 although sometimes it's 9:30 but it's only ever one of these two times (don't ask me why it changes cause I have no idea).Tartan_Terrier wrote:Did you fail recruit selection for not being fit enough?

10:30 is for the rest of the Infantry.

Generally speaking the fitter you get the faster you will be able to run, so the more cardio work you do the fitter you will get and you should see your run time gradually reduce. Make sure you do most of your runs on outside and not on treadmills as this will improve your running ability much faster than gym work.
If you keep at it you will get there, also try and join a local running club they will be able to give you all the help and advice you'll need to get your run time down.
Good luck mate.

10 Min Miles
Guys: The Marines run speed marches at a pace of 10 minute miles. Obviously, they are running with boots, fighting orders and weapons. However, the whole idea is about covering the distance in the given time, finishing together and then being able to still fight at the end of it. Also, the lanes around CTCRM aren’t flat, they're challenging, especially Killer hill. The Army and the Paras have different requirements, although still challenging in their own right.
All good stuff though.
Cheers
