An introduction and hello.

Post by mklex »

Hello to you all.

Thought it best be time I sign up to these forums and make a post, as I’m about to embark on the long hard journey to becoming a Royal Marine Commando.

A bit about me, a typical guy in his mid twenties 8gces (math English inc) to my name wanting to join the forces. Bored of working, living civvy street for 7 years, mucked about by women, finding it hard to find friends you can trust, crappy job lack of challenges all the usual. Life has become very stagnant. Thought it about time to do something productive with my life that myself and my family can be proud of.

Been doing sport martial arts since the age of 10, so I don’t give it the big one out on the town, but I feel its built fitness, discipline strength of mind, self respect, and on tap controlled aggression when needed I’m hoping these qualities will get me through the massive task ahead only time will tell I guess. I also enjoy football rugby but not all that great at either, a good laugh though.

I’m 5’9 and 62kg with very strong quads, abs and lower back, average CV, but lacking upper body My training is circuits set up for full body workout, with endurance in mind, lots of reps mainly using my body weight as resistance for now some very light weights from time to time, road running and swimming I’m breaking into slowly as both I’m pretty new too, lessons being taken in swimming to help.

Which brings me on to. Security clearance, this is my biggest concern :-? and a question I hope someone can shed some light on (I did search also inc Google), and of course I will be asking at my careers office once I get down there next week. Ok my biggest concern is large personal debt and a poor credit rating, from a 5 year failed relationship. Now it isn’t an issue to me as such as I have professional help in setting up my repayments and budget in relation to my income, which is inline with what basic training wages are. I haven’t borrowed money for 3years now and feel I have been responsible in my approach to the situation, I don’t let it get me down and keep my chin up :D , still get to go out with my mates just cant afford dominos every night and new trainers every month hehe  , so I’m hoping there wont be problem from an attitude side of things. Bottom line is will a poor credit rating affect my security clearance I guess? :-?

I’ll keep training away and get the wheel rolling, just its niggling in the back of my head, I am prone to worrying a lot though, I do keep picturing myself sometime next year wet through freezing my nuts of on dartmoore looking at my current worries wondering what all the fuss was about compared to what’s in store   …lets hope so hey.

I’ll keep you all informed how that goes and the rest of my training, application and all round progress.

Nice meeting you all.

Lex :)

Hopefully another member will enlighten us regarding your credit rating. I now only little of the RM's stance on potential recruits loans, but I believe you could be clear.

The main thing to do is begin the recruiting process, train steadily and consistently.

This forum is a gold mine of valuable information, make full use of the search button.

When do you believe you will achieve the required physical standard Lex?

I was asked about debt when I joined, although by the sounds of things you're worse off that I am; I just had a small loan and a few £k of credit cards. I just pointed out that I was sure I could afford the repayments on starting salary and they never asked again. Having said that my credit history was fine, defaults may have some effect, but so long as you're not on an IVA or bankrupt I think applying to OR will be okay if the repayments are affordable.

Just my opinion based on experience, as with all things talk to the AFCO.

Hey guys thanks for the warm welcome :)

Rob, im from Newport Pagnell mate, in a few weeks im going to get some hill sessions on the go at Campbell park once a week if your up for that :)

ADDiction, I'm hoping 8-12 weeks something around that ill probably have more time than that though looking at the lengh of the process.

Ok some positive news on the security clearence side of things, found cases of people getting clearence from Provesty and security services (they vet all military staff so I read) who are alot worse off than me, looks promising as long as im 100% honest about it all and can afford my payments. Still down to the AFCO also though I guess wich is fair doos, fingers crossed :)

Thanks again guys, great forums with lots of info so ill be off reading :) .
