I dont know of any branches which you call "semi elite", but if you dont mind me saying so it sounds like since you have a fear of jumping out a plane you would prefer an easier option but maintain the "eliteness". So my opinion would be to try for the Paras if thats what your set on as no doubt you will have to conquer many obstacles besides jumping out a plane and if you want to be a Para then you will have to show some bottle!

If you're scared of jumping out of a plain and you don't think it's something you can get over then don't even consider joining the Paras as if you refuse to jump you'll be out of the Regiment no questions and no 2nd chances so you will have put yourself through all that hard work for nothing.

Try looking into the Marines as they're the only other regiment which will offer you a similar challenge to the Paras.

However, is it just jumping out of a plane you can't stomach the thought of or heights in general? Because I know the Commando course involves "high obsticales" etc... and most of the army do adventure training which usually involves absailing (although that's probably not a pass or fail thing).

I think you'll find there are quite a few members of the Paras who have a fear of heights, and I'm certain that every one of them is terrified when they are standing in the doorway ready to jump. However, it's the overcoming of that fear that make them special, so don't think you are alone in that aspect. Conquering that fear is what makes a para unique.
Remember, knowledge is power, unless you forget it all.

Never been terrified standing in the door, on a numer of occasions the dispatcher has had to pull me back for looking out to far.
Now landing, that's different. Have s**t myself a few times coming in. :o

Very rarely do parachutes have a complete malfunction, twists however especially when jumping with heavy kit is a regular occurance. If your spare parachute fails then you hit the floor.

If at first you don't succeed... Jumping out of planes aint your sport!!

I've done near 100 jumps on square parachutes (more prone to malfunction) and I haven't had to use my reserve once. There was one very close time but it was ok in the end (probably should have cut-away really but i landed it ok)

Jumping out of planes is a calculated risk. I think on average, each skydiver does around 800 jumps per reserve ride (and thats on squares where problems are more likely, as there are more things that can go wrong). Obviously some have to cut away on their first jump but then some jumpers never cut away at all. Obviously, if it doesnt open you have your reserve, and as Paratrooper quite rightly pointed out, if that doesn't open, then well... you won't be getting up again  Reserves are designed to open though and open fast. They are pretty much brand new canopies and so will open. I think you chances are so slim have more chance of winning the lottery than dying jumping out of planes. And i dont play the lottery because the  That said though, people do die so it isnt all good

I am of course talking civvy jumping and not military, but from what i've heard, you are even less likely for anything to happen under a round canopy than you are a square.

If you are unsure, you could maybe go and do a civilian static line course at pretty much any dropzone in the UK. That way you will know for sure whether you'll do it or not.

If you're interested in giving it a go, let me know and ill get you the contact details for your nearest DZ mate
