Arite mate.

Right, phys starts in earnest the day after you get there with the retests of everything you did in gym test 1 on PRMC. At some point in week one you do the BFT 1.5 mile run best effort run around the sunny lanes of Lympstone. Starts off with a 1.5 run warmup jog then best effort back to camp. Don't go 110% on the uphill section as you will be full of lactic by the downhill home run.

From there on in your in the gym/swimming pool 5 days a week.
The first MSC (military strength circuit) will be introdcutory, and you also get rope tutiton, but still strict in terms of gym disclipne.

Phys prior to RT?
Good question.
CV wise I went in really distance running fit (5k and above) and to be honest I lost fitness by week 9.
Many would disagree but I would do short fast track intervals, something like an 800m runners program would be ideal.
Upper body just really keep ticking over, you will still be aching all over no matter how strong you are as your using different muscles in completely different order to what yor used to.

Don't worry too much about pre-RT phys. As long as your not too far off PRMC level you will be fine. Worry more about getting your admin cracked as you will get hammered with it in weeks 1-2.

Any more questions feel free mate.

Te best thing you can do is not worry. As has been said, providing you're on par with your PRMC, if not better, then you'll be fine. The PTI's are there to bring you up to the right physical level to meet, and exceed, the standards set at various points.

All you have to do is put the effort in, listen to the PTI's and not worry that you're not joining a troop as Superman.

I all honesty you will probably lose fitness when you first join, if not you gain a different sort of fitness instead.

Lots of swimming and dancing (you'll know what I mean when you get there).

The best sort of pre RT training to do, is drinking, sleeping, trapping women and watching jeremy kyle!! Because you aint gonna be doing any of that for a while. Just relax and take it easy, all you got to do is turn up at lympstone prepared to put 100% into everything!!

lol, but honestly if you can do PRMC you will be ok for RT? cos dotn they say you have to do a PT programe and then give it to them to see what you been doing ect?

lastly, once i hopefuly pass PRMC should i do 4-6 miles in 7 min mile pace to help with RT after PRMC?? or should i just stick to normal upper body pree-ups+3 mile runs?

yer definitely. The Phys at the start of training is easier than PRMC. Yer keep your phys ticking over but don't worry about it too much. Just relax and enjoy civvie life. I personally think sprints are better for RT than long runs, but like I said, just relax!!

Pre Joining fitness

Post by Tommo12K »

I've been reading alot about what kind of phys to do before joininig. Here are a few tips.

- Fartlek is the best anaerobic/aerobic running to do before joining. (It will train you for both long runs and short sprints)

- Forget doing any weights and if your are stop, only do exercises with your body weight press-ups can be done in many ways plus you are gunna lifting nothing extra then your body weight for the first 10 weeks so train you body that way. Weights will also wear down your joints and de-stabilise them if you don't use good form, this will open you up to the risk of injury.

- Swim, try and do medley (mixture of strokes) don't just be happy with breastroke. It will strengthen your upperbody and lung capacity. In training you use all the strokes you can.

In short stick to the programme you were given in the recruit handbook its actually very good if you stick to it and increase the reps by two every two weeks and change the order then you shouldn't have problems. Remember phys in training is progressive you do not want to be at a peak in fitness before you join or you will struggle later in training.

If anyone wants any tips on adapting training or training through injury send me a message.

Did anyone find that they lost fitness after their prmc? After an ironman doctors advise that you dont train (or compete in another, cant remember which) for 6 months as it takes that much out of you. Im in no way comparing a prmc to an ironman but I completely crashed after my prmc and I cant run half the distance I used to be able to.

I found I crashed a bit. Went back to training on the Monday after PRMC and found a 3 miler a real struggle, it only seemed to take a couple of runs to get myself back into it and now Im hitting 5 milers in decent times. The main thing I took from PRMC was a new level of pain and discomfort, so when Im training on my own I think to myself "I know I have been in worse pain than this, keep going!". Seems to work :D

Interesting read guys, I've learned a few tips from the above.

Just one question: how long normally is the gap between passing PRMC and starting RT?
