Hi all,
Well me and couple of friends have the chance to do the 3 peaks challenge for charity, so i've come here for some advice as alot of people here have experience in walking far distances with packs.
So could some people give me advice on how to prepare for it in the time before we try it.

Any help will be much apprectiated.

When are you planning on doing it?

Are the logistics sorted? Vehicles and so on?

Are you planning on doing it within a set time? The record is 15 hours.

Otherwise, get out on the hills and get walking, as the best training for hill-walking is hill-walking.

Don't overdo the weight to start with, but make sure you've got the essentials with you in case of emergency (warm clothing, food, waterproofs, bivi, MOBILE etc.)

Try walking up/down one hill for X amount of time (lets say 1-2 hours). To add to that try walking up the your choosen hill backwards for a few reps (just be carefull with the ankles), it really gets the quads working. As T_T has said go easy on the weight to start, then build up slowly.

I would question how motivated you'ld stay throughout that workout. After a while you'ld start to slow and not put in 100% no matter how hard you tried, but plotting a hilly route and walking it through the day'll keep you motivated throughout as you're always seeing new things. Thats my advice anyway, plan a hilly walk then walk it.

Other than that running, stair climbs etc. will all help

Thanks for advice.

Not planning to do it anytime soon, we want to get ready for it first, but we have people in a charity and a scout leader who does mountain climbing as a hobby who will go with us, and they said they're ready whenever we are and will support us.

One person i know earlier said that i should do the Yorkshire 3 peaks first as part of the training.

3 Peaks of Yorks is a good walk and will certainly get you used to walking with weight and a bit of hill climbing. Without knowing the 3 Peaks Challenge specifically - are there set routes, how far is each etc etc - none of the mountains are especially ninja climbs, just a case of onwards and upwards. Are you doing it for fun or aiming for a time?

If it's the 3 peaks challenge I knew it basically means you have to climb the three highest peaks in Wales, England and Scotland faster than the other teams. A lot of it is done in the Oggin, as in sailing to the nearest point of land to each peak. Old boss of mine Lt John Rye (later Captain) did it with another bloke who was a Mne (SC). The Mne later went on to win the Iron man challenge on ITV year after year. They won the 3 peak challenge three times on the trot back in the eighties.

Saying that this might be another version. So don't quote me on it.

From what I've heard Artist, you can drive from place to place (haven't heard about having to sail bits though).

Flying Ninja, get yourself up to Snowdonia, the Carnedds are a nice quiet range, (although height-gain is minimal along the top) or if you're feeling a bit more extreme, Snowdon via Crib Goch or the Glyders (especially Elidir Fawr.)

Also, the Snowdonia 15 Peaks challenge is pretty cool, but hard work.

As I said I'm talking about the original race. You still need a ruck of back up mind even if your going by road.

I'm actually doing the Yorkshire three peaks over easter, it looks a cracking day out.

I'll let you all know how it is when I get back!

I want to prepare an 8 hour route card, but my lame housemates reckon on 11. :evil:

Maybe if they got their fat carcasses in the gym from time to time they'd be more willing... :roll:

I've done the Yorks one a few times, they reckon a good time for average civvy bloke is under 10 hrs, which is about what I've done it in with me Dad just going for a walk (quick, but not thrashing it). I've cracked it in just under 8 myself, but that is quite hard work. To go any faster you'd have to start running the flat bits really.

Arrr! And there is the standard Bootneck attitude that I knew, loved and miss!!! :D 17th aniversary of me leaving the Corp last Friday. I still sometimes wake up in the morning thinking I'm adrift for the 0825hrs Turn to and Parade. Sad owd bugger that I am!

I planned and coordinated a successful 3 Peaks team last July so feel free to ask any questions.

For training, as per before: go hiking. Increase distance steadily, increase pace steadily and have a go at Scafell and Snowdon. Try 2 ascents in 24hrs while you're there. It's a good fun weekend away as well as training.

Head out every weekend you can and finish with a final walk of 25 miles. This is the total distance you will cover on the challenge and so mentally you know you can cover the distance and having scaled 2 of the 3 before, you are also prepared for the climbs.

Timings you should aim at are 3hrs 30 mins Snowdon and Scafell, 4hrs 30 mins Ben Nevis.

Time the drives carefully otherwise you'll get stuck in traffic and make sure you organise yourselves properly - be meticulous in your planning and you'll not go far wrong.
