swimming fitness

Post by ramz56 »

right i;m moving house and this means i will no longer be able to run as often as i would have liked, only at weekends so i will swim 5 times a week, can i get just as fit as i would with running by doing this? not continuous swimming, sets, intervals pyramids ect.
is it possible to be very fit only running 2 times a week and swimming 5 time a week?? will my running suffer?

What's to stop you running? Swimming is good for low impact CV but honestly you have to keep the running up.

No offence but dont be a pussy. Dont let those street rats get in the way of your dream, i live in a area full of these nobheads, i have been mugged while i came back from my running some months back, but i gave'em a bloody good fight, broke a few noses i did. i didnt have anything on me but my phone which got smashed while i was fighting. I still see those d#@k heads around my area but they dont look twice. Once again no offence but if you want to be a royal marine your just going to have to show some balls.

I agree to an extent Johnny but that'll probably end in a criminal record and thats the last thing you want.

Yeah but it often works the other way around, you could get accused of attacking them (as stupid as it sounds). It happens and they often win - i'v seen it happen! Why one lad out on a jog would attack 6 guys for no reason is beyond me

Defend yourself by all means but until you are firmly within the Royal Marines its best to avoid the situation completely.

Definitely recommend it. Considering your only 15 you have plenty of time to get fit. Swimming can increase your VO2 max, lung capacity. It's all about pushing yourself to your limits. When people ask such questions the only one with the answers is yourself. Because it entirely depends on how hard you push yourself.

theres a difference between balls and stupidity.
im sure most senior royals would tell you its a balance of balls and brains.
you need the balls to not dig a hole and bury yourself when the shit hits the fan, but use your head, and find a way out that poses the least risk.
hell special forces arent so bloody good because then run round all guns blazing kicking the shite out of everything that moves.

i dont know the area you're on about, but i stayed in peckham for a few weeks. i didnt go out running every night, even though im more then capable of taking care of myself (step dad is blackbelt tae kwon do, and lots of family friends have forces history, so fighting and self defence is something iv been taught all my life).

johnnyValencia, you say dont be a pussy, but how did you know what was going to happen?
ok, you got lucky. you didnt get injured seriously.
what if there had be 2 or 3 more of them. what if a couple had pulled knives. your dream would have been well f@#k up.
not going running may delay you a week or two. going running and being beaten unconcious or stabbed could stop you forever.

until a point where you have had significant effective training on dealing with a situation like that ramz56, ignor jonny.
if you live in area well know for a very high violent crime rate, why bother trying to prove you 'got balls' by getting into situations likely to end up with you in a serious, uncontrolled fight, with more people then you (probably considering how those f@#k twats are).

your AFCO will not say you are medically fit because you 'showed balls' by having your thumb cut of in a fight when you were out running.
they will say you "will never be a royal"
better to be a royal marine who used his head and avoided trouble, then a civvie who got stabbed in a fight.

up to you really.

Chris please! you make me sound like an idiot brut who looks for fights, by balls i mean going out doing your own thing, not thinking about others. My father lived in peckham and i would run around feeling fairly safe, obviously avoid the estates. You may not like the way i think or even the words i use, but i dont give a toss, I have been raised up to stand up for yourself and not care about what others think. You probably put your tail in between your legs when a black guys asks you for the time. I did just realise that he is 15 so i take back what i said previously, he is too young to deal with dangerous situations. My name is spelt Johnny not 'jonny', get it right next time

cheers

I've got to back Johnny here, he's got it spot on. Forget the law, the knives, and what may or may not happen and stand up for yourself otherwise you are nothing and you'll start to lose your sense of pride. All these wannabe "gangstas" have no skill and knives they don't know how to use. You can't always worry about what might happen, who's to say you can't take them? Who's to say you won't trip over a paving slab and break both your knee caps on your next run, just get on with it. As long as you don't give up or die you'll always recover and go back for more anyway. Life is full of fights. I'd rather wake up in hospital then look at my feet everytime some thug looked at me and casually hand over my mp3, chain and phone.

this might not be possable for you but what about running in the mornings? I no its not ideal but perhaps if you where up at six in the morning the "hood rats" as you put it would still be lieing in bed hung over and on a downer.
Mabye not but im shure you would be safer at that time than late at night...
