Breaking new boots in

Post by Bennett_WSR »

Been searching the forums for a while now, cant find much info on this. I Bought a pair of standard combat boots. anyone got any "serious" methods for breaking them in. I'm going for POC in May, going to start hill walking in boots, getting the miles up. just been wearing them everyday, and increasing the time each day. read some crazy methods on some other sites like pi**ing on them, showering in them, standing in a bucket of water, walking up stream in them.......

anyone got any better ideas?????

cheers, Bennett_WSR

on prmc we were told to wear them to walk in as much as possible, and apply neats foot oil to the boots. And also give them a good polishing. this has worked for me so far.

I broke mine in during my POC within the first 20 minutes

Seriously though you dont even notice you are wearing boots because everything else is BURNING.

Any boots I've had have just worn in with use, the best being a five mile walk. I've heard that if you soak the boots then walk in them until they are dry it helps but i haven't tried that, I always just used copious amounts of polish and lots of walking!

dont know about combat boots, but when I get a new pair of tramping boots I soak them in warm water to expand the leather and losen everything up then walk around in them for a few hours so that it dries, and the leather SHOULD (in theory) dry and contract and almost form a mold of your foot.

Just walk around in them, wear them in your house, go for a few long walks.

a) soak them in hot water, go for a 3mile jog in them. after this squeeze and screw them up as much as you can with your hands, trying to stretch and make them flexible.

then after dry...

b) polish them with tons of polish 3 times

...the following week...

c) wear them to work/school/college/uni/home for about 12 hours a day minimum.

d) if you have time at the weekend, get up on the hills, do some bergen training. (still using tons of polish)

- make them your main "FOOTWEAR", wear them for EVERYthing you do, eventualy they will be perfect for you...

Cheers lads. i soaked them in water for a couple of hours, then wearing two pairs of thick socks walked about in them for about 4 hours. seems to have don’t the trick. I’m walking in them everyday now. Didn’t think they would feel this comfortable. Though, it may be something to do with the £27 worth of specialist sole. Who knows!!!

Jiml mix it… don’t know the date for the POC yet. Basically I had an op on my knee last may and they said I had to wait a year before I could have my POC…. So I’m guessing its going to be after that.
To be honest the later the better, coz I need the extra training. Uni is killing me. Trying to stay off the beers, but im finding I don’t really have much of a social life anymore. + coz im really training now, im getting wrecked well quickly and really feeling it the next day.

For recruit training are you allowed to wear your own socks (e.g. 1000 mile socks) rather than the ones that you are given?. I suppose they don't check your socks do they?

Just thought i'd dig up this old topic... :D

Forgive my ignorance / inexperience but if I soak them should I walk in them untill they dry? Or would 1 hour of walking be enough? Should I polish them immediately after?

Thanks in advance.

Trick is:

Boot > Issue sock > Your sock > Foot

If you are tabbing, and have problem with blisters, try getting one of those silk liner socks from a camping store and put that on your foot first.
