Last Chance Saloon......

Post by southerncomfort »

Afternoon lads,

I posted on here a while back looking to join the RMR and after a few hiccups ( job promotion and two more kids) along the way I'm back at the beginning with time running out (29 yrs old now)..

I am looking to join RMR in henley as my nearest detachment and need to get my arse in to gear big time.. I read on here that there is a intake in july is this 100%? If so is there a basic standard of fitness you need to join the holding troop as my fitness has suffered with my job and now 4 kids to look after so I am right back at the beginning.

What do you reckon the chances are of getting in shape by july? I currently run the 1.5mile in around 15 mins (  dreadful I know but it is the first time in a long time since i was running last ) If there is anybody on here from the west berkshire area that is looking for a training partner please feel free to get in touch.

Keep up the good work on the site lads.

hard work mate and dedication will get you there in July. HT will give you the tools. Phone the detachment and find out about joining HT. Henley trains on a Tuesday night AFAIK. you might have to come to Bermondsey for an induction evening (will be on a wednesday). Good luck.

Hello matey and welcome aboard.. again! :P

July is 100% dude. I will hopefully find out a firm date this evening and let you know tomorrow.

July is also ages away, you have shedloads of time to get yourself fit enough to get through the selection weekend. However it looks like you will need to work on the running, I take it the fifteen minutes is on a treadmill?

All you need to do is take your time (15 mins) and try and cut a little bit off it each time you run. Nothing mental but 10-20-30 seconds each time you do it. The times will soon come down it will only take about three weeks to get your time down to below 10.45 which you’ll need for the PJFT.

Once you’ve cracked that start throwing in some longer distances such as 3 miles which you will need for the BFT. Bear this in mind though, the selection weekend will be held at Bermondsey (RMR London HQ). This means the 3 mile pass/fail run will be undertaken in Southwark Park, the park is a half mile from HQ and you run this at quite a pace. There will more than likely be a warm up thrown in also so train accordingly.

Factor in hanging out at the rear before you even start the 3 miler. :o

Also train sensibly and do not run every day, take a day off and include swimming and cycling if you can. Give your body time to rest and recover.

Lastly don’t worry about your age, I am 30 and having a crack!

Keep us informed of your progress, and all the best.

p.s 4 - Good effort on the kids mate!

cheers for that Beowulf,

My running times are cross country not on a treadmill, so I dont feel quite as bad about the time as its uneven and hilly and as im carrying some extra pounds i find it easier to run on grass.
I take my dogs with me as they have to be walked anyway but I only run every other day ranging from 1.5, 3 and 6 mile routes. I only swim and substitute the 1.5mile for sprints once a week is that gonna be enough do you think? I do a kickboxing class twice a week as well which is really helping with the cardio side of things.
Also as i go straight out running in the morning should i do a quick circuit before hand to get going as they would on the course? at the moment I do my circuits during lunch or in the evening.. should i get up earlier and do the lot in one go to get better equipped for what the tests will be like or will spliting the traning be fine for now?

I appreciate the advice cheers

That’s not so bad then, you will at some stage need to get on a treadmill and have a crack at the PJFT. But you are a long way off from that so no hurry.

It seems like you have everything covered such as 1.5 miles, 3 milers, sprints and circuits. All you may want to do is find a big hill and run up and down the bastard.

But and this is a big BUT do not over do it and I am talking from experience, there is plenty of time to get yourself into shape. Do not do what I did and over train and put yourself back seven months. As you are slightly older than most potential recruits your body may need a little longer to recover or not who knows. Training six days a week in my opinion is unnecessary and in reality when you have a full time job and a family to look after is unachievable anyway on a sustained basis.

My advice to you is get yourself down to the presentation evening in London, crack on with the AFCO process as it is quite lengthy and find out if Henely Det are running a Holding Troop. If so get down there and they will build you up to the required standard.

Don’t forget you don’t need to be Wonder Women to get into recruit training, the weekend will be tough it's supposed to be and once in they will work on you and you'll be up and down 30 foot ropes in no time.

Good luck matey

Hi guys,

Im a former Phase 1 recruit at Henley. Unfortunatly injury and other personal stuff forced me out back in 2004. Im 29 now and will hopefully be heading back to Henley soon. (most likley tomorrow).

Southerncomfort, It sounds to me that your doing pretty good with your phys just keep it up and try to get the times down a bit and you'll be ok. As they say July is far enough away to get some real progress in on the training.

Hello Matey,

And welcome aboard! I'm sure it will be very beneficial to all to have someone on board with some Phase 1 experience.

Good effort with giving it another go!

All the best mate.
