I was planning on doing the same thing mate but decided to do a degree to give me more preparation and also uni life 8) However sponsored entry is very very very difficult to obtain for the royal marines. I was told by the careers officer for my area its perhaps as little as 2 a year. Reason being the navy requires engineers etc and therefore funding is being pumped that way. It may be worth doing direct or considering a graduate entry.

GOOD LUCK!

Start talking to the AFCO asap. I was going to go down same route with POC around this month, injury saw that off; and reconsidering I have now decided to go Uni on my own back then apply, less pressure at the momenet.

You have to pass both POC and AIB while at college an dthen they may offer you sponsorship. If you ddecide after uni or whatever you don't want to join up you can pay it back then. As BOSS says though very few places, as it was put to me by my AFCO, the marines only need about 50 new officers a year, how many do you think they pay through uni?

Concentrate on your A-levels and then go to uni, the added pressure od training for bothe POC and AIB at the same time will in all likely hood lower your grades. And you need to be the both at AIB, POC, and your A-Levels before they'll paay you.

All said though if I hadn't been injured I would've tried for that route, avoids the mountain of debt I'm going to get, plus gives a more secure career prospect. So if you want it start talking to your AFCO now.

Ramz - yeah you would have to do POC/AIB before uni and they do have a sponsorship policy.
Chris - you can probably still get sponsored mate, I didn't do my POC 'til July last year and then AIB in September and that was still in time for this year. The board for the sponsorships doesn't meet until the end of September every year. Also you can get sponsored for just 1 or 2 years of your degree if you apply a few years down the line.

If your applying while still at school/college you'll probably find POC/AIB harder than the other lads doing it with you, but even if you didn't pass or didn't get sponsored, you'd get an amazing experience that would help you massively if you came to do them again a few years down the line. I rekon you should go for it, maybe do POC after your exams so you don't jeopardise your grades. You've got nothing to loose lads.
RMR might be an idea whilst your at uni also, get your green lid before you start YO training and keep you hungry for it, just a thought.
