At what pray tell? You need to be able to speak and write the Queens English in the forces. Hence why we moderators insist on the correct use of spelling and not some shite that is used on a mobile phone. The use of "words" like m8 and the use of i instead of I and such like will get you the status of GUEST on this website if you keep it up. No Wucking Forries! Type it as it should be and you will be Ok.

i think i share the same frustration as many of you:im sick of the lifestyle i lead and sick of getting stuck in ruts etc and im itching to start training and get on with life.

with regard to mates, well yes there is different definitions, for me there's aquaintances who you say hi and maybe chat to in the pub, then there's your circle of mates who you regularly see and socialise with, and out of these you might have some good mates who would do that little bit more and go that little bit further for you.

personally i would say i could easily count my good mates on one hand, those who would have my back no matter what and i theirs, for me its about loyalty and i think people can have as many mates as they want but very rarely are more than one or two truly loyal.

im not sure its a case of simply not seeing your mates at all, rather its about choosing the right distance.some people have said they're sick of the getting pissed etc well im not sure thats the problem inparticular, cos marines are known for their guzzling, its more the lifestyle that comes with it,ie/laziness.at the end of the day the marines is still a job and you still return home to see your mates, its just while they're working their 9-5 mundane jobs and going to the same niteclub at the weekend getting smashed and doing drugs your off being a soldier and experiences allsorts of things, while staying fit and healthy, meeting new people, making something of yourself.............i certainly know which life is for me.
Let us therefore brace ourselves to our duties, and so bear ourselves that, if the British Empire and its Commonwealth last for a thousand years, men will still say, 'This was their finest hour'

If I press the <shift> key I get a capital letter. One thing you will find in the Corps is a deep intolerance of lazy and inconsiderate people. You should be aware of the issue of poor presentation of messages, it's been mentioned a few times and Artist has mentioned this above.

Not bothering to follow simple rules of communication shows a lack of consideration for the recipient and no attention to detail or ability to follow instructions. Why don't you start dragging yourself away from civvy street by following the simple (albeit informal) rules of this site?

It might differentiate you from what I've heard described (at CTC) as the 'playstation generation' and you might get a better reception here.

Apperntly sticking a * at the front and end of a sentence is like an action.
I don't like drinking because it seems such a waste of money to me and then when I am drunk (once in the last 3 months) I can't be bothered to do anything but I will drink if I am forced to but not under peer pressure though, and the only drink I do like is cidar. Also I don't use the word 'mate' or any chav words and I never go out looking for girls, I'm not gay but I am just not into that sort of thing. I think that's why I don't fit in well with this civilization. Will I fit into the marines?

(P.S. This message makes me sound like a nerd a little but I don't think I am )

If you download Firefox 2 (http://en.www.mozilla.com/en/), it comes with a spell checker built in (defaults to US English but can be reset to the Queen's English) which is mighty useful when it comes to spelling and grammar in posts.

As for the actual content of the thread, I'm another one in the same boat. Only difference here though is that the friends I have who do have some drive and focus in life have all buggered off to university, leaving me with the stoners, hippies and general layabouts - the latter groups do have an excuse though, it's all to do with being in a band apparently!

There was a thread with a question like that a while ago, where someone was asking if they would fit into the Royal Marines in spite of their non-drinking lifestyle. Everything was anwsered there, so I'll just redirect you.

http://www.mfat.co.uk/forums/viewtopic. ... t=drinking

You might get a bit bored while all your mates are ashore though, mate.

Me nither, until the last year or so when becomeing a marine became a goal instead of a distant dream for me... now i've tryed to clean up my act and get it sorted. hopefully by the time im eighteen i'll be spelling with the rest of them....that does sound geekey, but if it means me makeing a good first impresion on my CV/writen tests etc then i'm happy to geek it up :D

Plus I'd rather stay out of trouble with some of the folks on here... they can't half rip you apart from some of the other posts i've read :o

Oh sh*t! theres a spelling test? :o

Dont fret about 'will i fit in' you'll be your own person and you'll get along with the majority of people (unless you are a w*nker, but if you're on here you cant be that bad)

And hey if you dont want to drink when they go ashore, then you will always be wanted as a sober driver if the situation allows!

That doesnt sound geeky at all, its about being able to fulfil a basic function which ALL human beings should be able to do really, especially in a western society. MAKE SURE YOU STAY IN SCHOOL AND BLOODY LEARN!!

Take it from me, i have had people i knew say 'i iwsh i could go back and do it all again' because they f!cked up! Make the best of yourself in school, thats not to say "don't have fun" - by all means, have fun, but you have to know that theres a time for pissing about and theres a time for actually doing your work and making sure you're learning. For me, the fear of having nothing after school scared me and it should do for you as well.

I remember my history teacher when i was in year 10 & 11 (very, very smart man - bit of a nob at times though but he was ok) saying "a few years from now you will look back on those halcium days at school when life was easy, trust me, you will. Because there is a time for work and a time for play, and you must disapline yourself to this"

My god how right was he! School's a walk in the park compared to being a grown up mate. But, lucky for me, i always knuckled down and made what i could of myself and got a decent education, thats not to say that i didn't piss about, because i definately did  but i always knew when to stop and when to work instead. Disapline yourself to "a few years from now you will look back on those halcium days at school when life was easy, trust me, you will. Because there is a time for work and a time for play, and you must disapline yourself to this" and i swear by this, you will be fine because you will have done the best you can providing you actually bothered.

School is important - DO NOT P!SS IT AWAY! Most people don't get a second chance, do not be one of them!

Also......

LOVE IT! 8)
