Sore Wrists

Post by Mr_Kiwi »

Okay so I've been training quite a bit lately (nothing over the top) and have found that after say 20 pushups I feel a very sharp pain in my wrists.

Is there anyway to strengthen my wrists? I've started putting a dumb-bell in each hand and only moving my wrists around but thats with 6kg bells so it starts to hurt pretty quickly.

Any ideas?

hiya mate,

you can try and strengthen your wrists by placing your hands diffrent ways on the floor, palms out, palms upward and palms inwards, you will probably find this quite hard so do them on your knees just to strengthen them or try doing some boxing!

Or try this with your dumbbells

Cheers mate, I'll try the floor approach as I started doing the curls (including left and right movement) when the pain started appearing.

no dumbells may strenghten your wrist but what you need is those hand grips, they are like grips you squeeze to sternghten your forarms but they work wonders for you wrists, ask at your local sport shop for hand grips they should know what you mean and don't forget to start with light resistance

Sweet as Ramz, I just stopped using them to post this response :)

I never felt them working my wrists, but i'll step up the use of them. Unfortunately they make a horrible squeaking sound so I have to do it outside otherwise all the people in my flat go freaking bonkers

Sounds like your tendons might be getting a bit sore. If the soreness or pain persists get yourself down to your local osteopath, and lay off exercize for while.

If you don't you could be risking long term or permanent damage.

If it's a sharp pain you're feeling then it could be an overuse injury. I've written about this in a previous topic so I won't bother boring everyone again, here's a link to my post: (about halfway down page 1)

Please ignore my bad mood in that post

As a little aside, dumbbells can strengthen your wrists, you need to kneel with your forearms on a bench, palms facing upwards, with your hands hanging off of the edge of the bench. Holding a dumbbell in this manner perform a curl movement, raising your hands upwards and towards your body. Keep your forearms firmly on the bench at all times.

Best of luck,

I think people just think up crazy things so they can be a world record holder at something, they probably don't care what it is.

Those grips did wonders to strengthen my wrists, i had a accident when i was a skater  (abuse later please lads) and ended up doing a superman impersination down a flight of stairs and landed on my chin and all the force going to my left wrist, turns out i damaged ligiments and for about 6 months after it was always strapped up when doing ju-jitsu and i struggled in the gym with free weights as my left wrist would colllapse. Anyway in the end i bought some 'grips' and would just sit there using them when ever i could and my wrist got back up to strength in no time. So it's definately worth it IF it's weak wrists you're sufferin from.
